A VICTORIAN TWELFTH NIGHT BALL
The Dickens Fair Reunion Ball
100 N. Ellsworth Avenue, San Mateo, CA 94401
Doors Open: 6:45 pm
Dance Lesson: 7:00 pm
Formal Dancing Begins: 8:00 pm
Tickets at the door: $20.00
Band: Bangers & Mash
PEERS’ Website: http://www.peers.org
Ball Website: http://www.peers.org/12th2010.html

Dance, sing, feast and game at the season’s loveliest old-fashioned holiday party – a 12th Night Ball hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Bangers and Mash, the Bay Area’s most irresistible country dance band, will play a variety of Viennese and rotary waltzes, polkas, mazurka waltzes, schottisches, the Lancers, reels, and other set dances popular in the early and mid-19th century (As usual, all set dances will be taught or called and partners are not required. Indeed, introductions to partners will be cheerfully provided!).

Suggested costume is evening or day dress from 1837 through 1870 (the heyday of Dickens’ literary career), any class. Modern evening dress is, as always, a completely acceptable substitute for period costume, and there is no dress code for the evening. Ladies, if you’re wearing a ball gown or evening gown, please be sure to bring a wrap since the ballroom will be cold before the dancing starts. Once we start dancing, the ballroom warms up beautifully!

Intermission entertainment includes an interactive performance by the Peerless Music Hall and a special performance by our guest of honour, Mr. Charles Dickens. Gamers may enjoy either an intellectual game of whist or a rollicking game of Wink, and the evening will conclude with a glorious Hallelujah Chorus sing-a-long.

To sustain us through this vigorous evening of dancing, punch and a light Old English snack buffet will be served (As usual, your potluck contributions to Mrs. Fezziwig’s kitchen are very welcome).

If you have any questions or need more information, please email peers@peers.org or call (510) 522-1731.

If you have found something, what was it (no details), where was it found, when was it found, and what did you do with it?

FOUND:
Last Sat. (12/3/05), in the 'snow' outside the V & A after the final perfomance of the day, one single Ladies glove. I currently have it in my possession. Contact me via private message on tribe, and describe it. If I don't hear from anyone by this Sat. (12/10/05), I will turn it in to the Gift Shop by the entrance, upon my arrival to Fair. I would really love to be able to hand this back to the owner in person, if possible. (I think there is a "Black Hole" in Lost & Found, where things go in, but never come out. I know they mean well... ) This is a very nice glove, that I really think the owner would desperately want back.

Sonya, did you ever get your Lace glove back?

Oh, and please let us know if you were reunited with your item, or if it is still missing.

It didn't even matter that most of the time she couldn't actually hear what was being said as she walked by, just the sense that there were actual events happening around her really made it special. The occasional fairy or Alice character running through the streets definitely added to the mix as well.
I realise , it's meant to be a hallowed tradition , but is part of that keeping it dusty to show age? Just curious.

Usually when the parade comes through , we try to draw customers attention to it , by making hungry remarks at all the lovely food , until last Sunday when a customer remarked , "You'd have to be VERY hungry to eat such old food!" ( Also , unplanned-ly , the parade came up behind Fagin , and we told him it was an evil plot to make him try pork! ).

I lost a pink polar fleece glove on Saturday night after the special event walking from the back of Prince Eddy bar (through the green room areas) to the participant lot. Went back to look for it, but it was gone. Checked lost & found Sunday morning, but they didn't have it.

If anyone found it, it has sentimental value (from a scarf and glove set from my cousin from Switzerland). It's a right hand glove. =)

So last night I was out walking my pooch, and I started singing, (as I often do, much to the chagrin of my neighbors) The first song that always comes out of my mouth is “Wall” In my mind one of the best songs I have ever written, and it has become quite popular for me to sing it at faire. It is requested quite often. At faire, I can sing, while standing atop The Well, up at St Ives, and over at the Military Camp while they are all eating (singing for my supper). Well what was fun about last night, is that I have been getting ready for Dickens, and my bad cockney permeated the song and who knew… but IT WORKED.. and it worked well. (at least in my opinion.)

Is there a place up at Dickens where people sing random songs? I have seen carolers in the streets, but I don’t see this as one of those. This is a song to be performed to a group.
Suggestions?

Myself, I think this is the season to start spending quality time with seriously spicy food. The more ginger, garlic, and hot peppers, the better. Thai restaurants are your friend.

If you're alrerady snuffly, then my personal rcommendation is fresh ginger tea and lots of it. Slice up a whole ginger root, simmer it for awhile, ad some lemon and honey, drink whole pot. repeat as necessary.

The show needs a number of unseen heroes, as well as the visible cast. These are the people who really make the thing happen. If you are interested in working the backstage crew, come see us. We are looking in particular for dressers to assist the cast. Don’t laugh, you! You might be surprised how many costumes are involved, and how much changing into and out of goes on. And how much quick movement of props and fluffing of drapery. Seriously, it’s hard work putting on this show!

COME SEE US at DCF Workshops on November 7, at the beginning of Postcards’ Audition (exact time & location will be in the workshop schedule) Any Questions? Contact the Directrix, Diana Young-Peak at dgbyoung@aol.com.

For example: could four people use the one coupon, and only pay $44 for the four of them? Or would each pair need its own coupon? Also, if one is using the two-for-one coupon, could one ALSO get the free child's admission-or does one have to choose between the two?

Hi gang,

this is your mostly-absent due to final examinations, etc., moderator again. Glad to see the list live on in the face of other, more popular networking sites.

So every year about this time I start getting a steady trickle of messages from people reading along, requesting that this message or that one be deleted. We have a public tribe here. You may not realize that there is an alternate tribe for the folks who work here. It was started some time after this one was, and was created to be private. That has left us as the public face of Dickens Fair on Tribe, which means that there are topics we should really avoid here and reserve for there. The niceties of participants sharing alcohol with whom and how exactly it's made available and by whom should probably be covered over there. That's really one of those areas where the details are best left buried rather than aired.

Now, just because this is the de facto public tribe does not mean that it is a stand-in for publicity for the fair. I don't believe that anyone is going to stumble across these threads and take seriously that they are an accurate representation of what the fair is, what it stands for, and how it would like itself to be presented to the public, and I do not enforce restrictions based solely on that reasoning. The tribe doesn't have any official association with fair management, and I don't expect that to change. That aside, we do occasionally stray into some less safe topics, and it has caused some concerns.

So let's be sensible, play nice, and remember that we wouldn't want to be responsible for getting anyone else in trouble with management, and the teeming masses of non-participants have access to this tribe, too.

And given that this comes up every year, we may want to rethink the existence of a public Dickens Fair tribe at all. Is there anything this tribe supplies that the workers tribe does not? If it's purely redundant, why do we need a second? I'm willing also to take this private if that's the preferred solution, but it seems a bit silly to me to have *two* private Dickens Fair tribes.

I would like to hear your at least semi-serious thoughts.

( So of course I'm posting it on TRIBE , so fewer peeps see it , and thus less embarassament , in the event it's not such a good idea after all. )

As you should be aware , this month there's going to be a NEW movie version of "A Christmas Carol" ( All motion capture animations & Jim Carrey and 3-D & Mega-Screen complexity. )

Here's the rub...have you seen any of the print ads or posters ? Well , let me hip you , it's called "DISNEY's A Christmas Carol" ... apparently Ol' Chuckles Dickens DIDN'T write it after all! Doesn't that just bake your potato?

Now , I'm not suggesting anything with EVIL intent , but perhaps a nose pinching! Here's the idea: We get Dickens cast members in full regalia "picketing" the film ! ( Of course you'd need flyers to hand out. ).With signs reading: "Unfair To Charles Dickens!" , etc. Chanting "Bah Humbug!" etc.

Now , I'm not against Disney or the Film itself , just the fact that the title , will continue to make people even more illiterate in the arena of proper literature. ( Ask kids: who wrote "The Jungle Book" ? )

Even funnier - if you are among those whom remember the religious nuts picketing "Life of Brian" - would be to hand out little pamphlets , who's title reads " Who was Charles Dickens? " , and then have a list of facts ending with: "Author of the short story "A Christmas Carol".

Just a bug in the ear. ( I'm good at coming up with this sort of rubbish , but horrible at making it happen.)

Heaven knows the song is old enough, and well known to lots of people, even if they don't know half the words. I only know the most standard version i.e. "should old acquaintence be forgot and never brought to mind?" etc, but couldn't we just sing that?

As some of you know, I was fortunate enough to publish my novel earlier this year. "In The Eye of The Beholder" takes place in fin de siecle Paris and late Victorian London. The book is easiest obtained through my publisher in the UK (we have ongoing issues with the Amazon catalog listing), at this link: http://www.turnermaxwellbooks.com/In_The_Eye_of_the_Beholder.htm . The multi-format eBook version is available at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/2163 if you would prefer.

I want to celebrate the book with my friends, and thought it would make the most sense to do so during Dickens Faire. Therefore, at the date and time above, I would be honored if you would meet me at the Absinthe Bar; we will move to the tables at Mad Sal's as needed. Bring your paperback copy of the book and I will happily sign it for you.

I understand that many people have gigs and that the scheduling may not be ideal. I hope some of you are able to stop by and say hello. :-)

Meanwhile, here is our latest ball write-up

Waltz the night away in a beautiful candlelit ballroom with the San Francisco Bay Area’s most glamorous Undead at the 16th Annual Le Bal des Vampires.

Suggested costume is evening dress of the century and country of your “rebirth.” This may include dress uniform, period costume (authentic or fantasy), vintage attire, or modern evening dress. There is no dress code for the ball (We certainly don’t expect Spike to attend in black tie!), but you will see some of the most gorgeous and creative costumes of the social season at Le Bal des Vampires. For some fun photos and useful costume tips, please see our ball website at http://www.peers.org/vamp09.html

This year there will once again be simultaneous dancing on two separate floors:

Our band in the elegant upstairs ballroom is the stylish but always dashing chamber ensemble Bangers & Mash. As usual, haunting waltzes dominate the program, but the evening will feature a variety of dance music from across the centuries – from 18th century Baroque contredanses to 19th century Victorian rotary and Viennese waltzes, polkas, and mazurkas to elegant early 20th century tangos, blues, and fox trots and even some classic rock and roll Swing. Please note that the band’s first dance set will start at 7:45 pm sharp – 15 minutes earlier than usual. The dance sets will be unusually long, even by Bangers & Mash’s high standards, so if you do plan to dance, please be certain to wear shoes or boots you can actually dance in.

For those preferring a more modern style of dance music and free-style dancing, join us downstairs in Le Bal des Vampires’ Dracula’s Daughter’s Discotheque for a wonderfully varied repertoire of music to stir the blood and spirit from 6:30 p.m. to Midnight. Hosted by our principal DJ, Dark Moon, the disco also features a no-host (cash) bar and light refreshments for our mortal guests.

Our half-time show in the ballroom is a performance by the celebrated Le Theatre des Vampires. Not recommended for the faint of heart but highly recommended for fans of the genre.

Edgar Allan Poe finally getting proper funeral
October 6th, 2009 @ 11:09am
By BEN NUCKOLS
Associated Press Writer

BALTIMORE (AP) - For Edgar Allan Poe, 2009 has been a better year than 1849. After dozens of events in several cities to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, he's about to get the grand funeral that a writer of his stature should have received when he died.

One hundred sixty years ago, the beleaguered, impoverished Poe was found, delirious and in distress outside a Baltimore tavern. He was never coherent enough to explain what had befallen him since leaving Richmond, Va., a week earlier. He spent four days in a hospital before he died at age 40.

Poe's cousin, Neilson Poe, never announced his death publicly. Fewer than 10 people attended the hasty funeral for one of the 19th century's greatest writers. And the injustices piled on. Poe's tombstone was destroyed before it could be installed, when a train derailed and crashed into a stonecutter's yard. Rufus Griswold, a Poe enemy, published a libelous obituary that damaged Poe's reputation for decades.

But on Sunday, Poe's funeral will get an elaborate do-over, with two services expected to draw about 350 people each _ the most a former church next to his grave can hold. Actors portraying Poe's contemporaries and other long-dead writers and artists will pay their respects, reading eulogies adapted from their writings about Poe.

"We are following the proper etiquette for funerals. We want to make it as realistic as possible," said Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum...

...Baltimore has a decided advantage over the other cities that lay claim to Poe, notes BMA director Doreen Bolger. "We have the body," she said.

This week, that's true in more ways than one. Jerome said he's gotten calls from people who thought he was going to exhume Poe's remains and rebury them.

"When they dug up Poe's body in 1875 to move it, it was mostly skeletal remains," Jerome said. "I've seen remains of people who've been in the ground since that time period, and there's hardly anything left."

Instead, Jerome commissioned local special-effects artist Eric Supensky to create an eerily lifelike _ or deathlike _ mock-up of Poe's corpse.

"I got chills," Jerome said Monday upon seeing the body for the first time. "This is going to freak people out."

The body will lie in state for 12 hours Wednesday at the Poe House, a tiny rowhome in a gritty section of west Baltimore. Visitors are invited to pay their respects.

Following the viewing will be an all-night vigil at Poe's grave at Westminster Burying Ground. Anyone who attends will have the opportunity to deliver a tribute.

On Sunday morning, a horse-drawn carriage will transport the replica of Poe's body from his former home to the graveyard for the funeral.

Actor John Astin, best known as Gomez Addams on TV's "The Addams Family," will serve as master of ceremonies.

"It's sort of a way of saying, 'Well, Eddie, your first funeral wasn't a very good one, but we're going to try to make it up to you, because we have so much respect for you,'" said Astin, who toured as Poe for years in a one-man show.

The service won't be a total lovefest, however. The first eulogy will come from none other than Griswold.

"People are asking me, 'Jeff, why are you inviting him? He hated Poe!'" Jerome said. "The reason is, most of these people defended Poe in response to what he said about Poe's life, so we can't have this service without having old Rufus sitting in the front row, spewing forth his hatred."

Eulogies will follow from actors portraying, among others, Sarah Helen Whitman, a minor poet whom Poe courted after his wife's death, and Walt Whitman, who attended the dedication of Poe's new gravestone in 1875 but didn't feel well enough to speak. Writers and artists influenced by Poe, including Arthur Conan Doyle and Alfred Hitchcock, will also be represented.

Jerome expects to cry _ one reason he won't be speaking. Even his rivals are impressed with the scale of the tribute.

"Annoyed as I am with Baltimore sometimes, I have to give them credit," said Philadelphia-based Poe scholar Edward Pettit, who argues his city was of greater importance to Poe's life and literary career. "Baltimore has done an awful lot to maintain the legacy of Poe over the last 100-some years."

Damn I wish I culd get to that. Anyone got spare tickets to Baltimore?

Hi everyone,

My name's Kirilee and I've been lurking on this loverly community for a couple of months now. And I have a couple of questions to ask, if that's alright. I'm planning a year-long studenty trip next year and, ever since I discovered the amazing Dickens' fair, I've wanted to head over there and participate in 2010 (I know, I know - I'm a little early, but I'm planning my trip around this). The problem is: I live in Brisbane, Australia and would only be able to get to San Francisco right at the beginning of November. My question is this: Is there any way I can still be involved? Possibly even auditioning via youtube or something? I don't really care what role I would have, but I'd love to be part of the Otherbooks Nicholas Nickleby cast, as that's my absolute favourite Dickens'. Would I even be allowed to volunteer, coming from another country? And who should I get into contact with to confirm that I'd even have a chance (I'm a little shy to go straight to the top if I'd only be a nuisance)?

Thank you so much for reading all my prattle and good luck with the Fair this year! I look forward to reading about your preparations and hope to join you next year,

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair
Auditions for

THE MIKADO

Stage Director: Denise Gutierrez (Dora [Mrs. Reginald] Foghorn)

Music Director: Barry Koron (Professor Koron)

Assistant Director / Stage Manager: Paul Sinasohn (Reginald Foghorn)

Producers: Cat Taylor & Robert Young

The Mikado is probably the best-loved and most well-known of all the Gilbert & Sullivan comic operas, and was featured in the Oscar-winning film Topsy Turvy. On the surface it appears to make fun of Japan and the Japanese, but the “Japan” of The Mikado is really a fantasy kingdom serving as a setting for a satire on English society and manners – satire that rings amazingly true today, in the US over a hundred years later.

Denise Gutierrez and Paul Sinasohn have created a one-hour adaptation of the show (similar to what has been done for Pirates of Penzance in the past.) which will be performed on the Victoria & Albert Music Hall Stage twice each Fair day.

Director Info: Denise Gutierrez is a theatrical professional, specializing in wigs and makeup. She has 30 years of experience with G&S shows, having worked with Lamplighters (the Bay Area’s premier G&S performing troupe) since 1979. She has been with San Francisco Opera for 26 years and has been a department head at Festival Opera (Walnut Creek) for the past 15 years. She is new to the Dickens Fair. Denise’s husband Paul Sinasohn has been performing and directing at the Dickens Fair since 2000 and has extensive G&S performing experience with Lamplighters and other Bay Area ensembles .

PRINCIPAL ROLES

We are looking for strong singer/actors for the following roles. Experience with Gilbert & Sullivan not necessary if you can sing and act the role. Some roles may be double-cast or understudied.

KO-KO * Patter Baritone * Lord High Executioner of the town of Titipu, guardian of (and in love with) the lovely young Yum-Yum.

NANKI-POO * Tenor * romantic lead. Son of the Mikado (Emperor), who has fled the imperial court and come to Titipu disguised as a wandering minstrel.

POOH-BAH * Bass/Baritone * Titipu’s Lord High Everything Else, an extremely haughty and exclusive person.

THE MIKADO * Bass/Baritone * The fierce emperor of Japan, whose governing philosophy is “let the punishment fit the crime.”

PISH-TUSH * Baritone * Strong chorister who sings in “Big Black Block” trio. Remaining solos have been cut in this adaptation.

YUM-YUM * Soprano* Ko-Ko’s ward, lovely, irresistible, and fully aware of her charms. In love with Nanki-Poo.

PITTI-SING * Mezzo * Yum-Yum’s somewhat bold and irreverent friend.
PEEP-BO * Soprano * Another of Yum-Yum’s friends. Member of the chorus.
KATISHA * Contralto * an older lady in love with Nanki-Poo and determined to get him back at any cost.

CHORUS OF SCHOOLGIRLS, NOBLES, GUARDS AND TOWNSPEOPLE: As with most Gilbert & Sullivan shows, the chorus is a very important part of the action, and has much stage time and wonderful music. We need 2 each sopranos, altos, tenors and basses.

AUDITION INFORMATION:

Auditions will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

AUDITIONS ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please send an EMAIL to regfoghorn@yahoo. com requesting an audition appointment. Give your first and second choices of times (i.e. first choice – between 3:30 – 4:00; second choice – around 6 PM). You will be notified by return email of the time and place of your audition appointment. If you do not have email, you may call 510-368-1178 – but email communication is greatly preferred.

PREPARE A SONG: Please come to the preliminary audition with one song in English, preferably from opera or operetta, that you feel will show off your voice well. An accompanist will be provided. Bring sheet music (if possible) in the key in which you will sing. Also bring your calendar so that you can give us any conflicts that you may have during the rehearsal period. Headshot and resume are optional. If you are needed for a callback, you will be notified.

PRODUCTION INFORMATION

THERE WILL BE TWO PERFORMANCES EACH DAY OF FAIR: sometime between 11:30AM and 5:00PM Cast members may be needed to help move set pieces on and off stage before or after the show.

REHEARSALS will begin in late September. Music rehearsals are set to accommodate everyone’s schedule; in the past this has meant some Friday nights for music rehearsals. Staging/blocking rehearsals are scheduled to start the first weekend of Dickens Fair workshops, Nov. 7/8, but may start sooner if we have an appropriate location.

THE ABBREVIATED VOCAL SCORE and script will be made available to you; if you wish to buy one on your own and mark it up, please get the G. Schirmer edition.

PLEASE NOTE: Cast members may be asked to donate a few hours to help with costumes, etc. Some cast members will need to help move the minimal set pieces on and off stage before/after the show. We will be asking cast members to wear part of their normal Dickens Fair costume as part of their Mikado costumes. Cast members will need to provide their own hairpieces needed to achieve proper Victorian hairstyles. Ladies must have petticoats, not hoops, available due to stage space limitations.

IF YOU ARE NEW TO DICKENS FAIR: Note that you will need to acquire or create a Victorian-era costume, complete with period hair, shoes, and head covering. This can be done relatively inexpensively, and advice is available, as are reference materials. Also, there is a $10 participant fee for each performer covering the run of Fair, this basically covers the cost of onsite EMT and general insurance. Parking at the Cow Palace costs $10 per day, but you can purchase a run-of-fair parking pass for about $55 (a very good bargain).

The Dickens Christmas Fair runs Friday November 27th and weekends through December 20th. More information on the Great Dickens Christmas Fair can be found at http://www.dickensf air.com/, performer information can be found at http://dickensfair. com/performerinf o.htm Workshops and rehearsals for the Dickens Fair will be held in Pacifica for two weekends: November 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th, then one weekend: November 21st and 22nd at the Cow Palace in Daly City.

It is with sorrow that I report the passing of Don Brown, The Mullah (and Founder of the Tea House of Mullah Nasrudin's Donkey and Mr. Brown's), from this earthly coil. Don died peacefully in his sleep this morning (June 9, 2009) at about 10:55am. One minute he was there and the next he slipped quietly away.

Don's last days were made as sweet at possible by the many friends who were able to visit and send cards and emails. Kristi and Jeremy McMaster organized his care and are mostly truly his spiritual children.

Someone I'm debating in another on-line forum offered the following "Dickens" claims and quote:

____________________________________________________________________________
One of the most influential British journals of the day was All the Year Round, edited by Charles Dickens. On September 6, 1861, Dickens gave his account of the causes of the war: It was "a question of political power between North and South," he wrote, mostly because of the Three-Fifths Clause of the Constitution, which inflated the congressional representation of the southern-dominated Democratic Party. This allowed the South to effectively oppose the North’s mercantilist agenda of protectionist tariffs, corporate welfare, and central banking (the economic platform of the Republican Party of the time).

Thanks to the protectionist tariff, Dickens wrote, "Union means so many millions a year lost to the South; secession means the loss of the same millions to the North. . . . The quarrel between the North and South is . . . solely a fiscal quarrel."
______________________________________________________________________________

The source of this claim is a libertarian neo-Confederate quoting another libertarian neo-Confederate.... Both of whom have previously been known to be sloppy in their historical research.

I'm wondering if anyone in our company has access to copies of Dickens "All the Year Round" in the 2nd half of 1861...

...and could check if Dickens actually said anything like this.

Why my doubts? Because Chas.Dickens left no doubt to anyone who read "American Notes" that he was absolutely appalled by slavery, and as pro-abolitionist as the the day was long.

Swinging on the Riviera one day,
And laying in a Bombay alley next day.
Through kissing persuasive lips,
Odds are you won’t live to see tomorrow.

Secret Agent Man! Secret Agent Man!
They’ve given you a number
And taken away your name!

Don’t miss the most swinging ball of the season for those spies who live a life of danger and romance. Secret agents, femme fatales, megalomaniac villains and innocent bystanders are all invited to this musical tribute to the Cold War Secret Agent.

Sara & Swingtime play a varied and always suspenseful evening of vintage ballroom dance music, hot Swing, and cool blues, including a few secret agent movie song classics. Dance East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop, elegant fox trots, blues fox trot, and tango, the cha-cha and rumba, the night club two-step, and a number of truly haunting waltzes.

Suggested attire is vintage or modern evening dress or 1940’s through 60’s costume (from early Hitchcock to “The Avengers.”). Day dress is always perfectly acceptable for you innocent bystander types who have just wandered into the adventure and have, perhaps, seen too much for your own good! (Remember “The Man Who Knew Too Much”?!). In deference to Mrs. Peel’s impeccable fashion sense, the ladies may choose to adopt either traditional evening dress or a trouser suit!

There will be a no host (cash) bar, and a light snack buffet (your potluck contributions are very welcome! Even 00 operatives have to eat!). At intermission there will be musical and dance performances by the famous Danse Libre and notorious PEERS Flying CirCUS and dance music provided by our mystery DJ.

To order advance tickets for the ball, please send a check for $15.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501.

Since the recently knighted Sir Terrence Pratchett has been called the Dickens of the 21st Century, PEERS' Unseen University Ball just might appeal to our fellow Dickens Fair Folk. The city state of Ankh-Morpork is kind of a cross between Renaissance Italy and Dickensian London so the costume possiblities are limitless. Here's our latest ball write-up:

THE UNSEEN UNIVERSITY BALL
A Graduation Ball for the Wizards of Ankh-Morpork
Inspired by the Disc World novels of Sir Terrence Pratchett
(Sponsored by the Period Events & Entertainments Re-Creation Society)
Saturday, May 2, 2009
Masonic Lodge of San Mateo Ballroom
100 N. Ellsworth Avenue (at the corner of Ellsworth & Tilton)
San Mateo, CA 94401
Doors Open: 6:45pm
Dance Lesson: 7:00 pm
Formal Dancing begins at 8:00pm
Band: Avalon Rising
Tickets: $15.00 in advance (by Tuesday, April 28)
Tickets at the Door: $20.00
Ball Website: http://www.peers.org/unseen.html

Arch-Chancellor Mustrum Ridcully of Unseen University requests the pleasure of your company at a grand ball in the University's Great Hall in honour of its current crop of graduating wizards (those who have actually managed to survive until graduation, that is!).

We are once again proud to announce that the evenings' guest band is Avalon Rising - one of the most magical dance bands on this or any other world - equally at home playing Victorian and vintage ballroom dance music, hauntingly beautiful Celtic and Celtic Fusion, and Renaissance rock (Yes, you heard that right!).

We will be dancing waltzes, polkas, schottisches, mazurka waltzes, reels, contradances, and other popular couple and set dances of the 19th century; some elegant Renaissance dances; and even some "music with rocks in it," as the Arch-Chancellor himself describes it. While some of the dances are choreographed set dances (which will be taught or called), others are open to free-form improvisation (Everything from free-style rock to Victorian polkas and Irish polka sets are some times danced to the very same music when Avalon Rising plays. We're not sure how, but think it's some form of magic!).

Fantasy costumes from the Disc World novels of Terry Pratchett, fantasy costumes from any universe, and, of course, magical or wizard costumes are admired but not required. Yes, here's your chance to sport your Harry Potter costumes! Guests may also come in period costume and still be in style. In the city of Ankh-Morpork, fashions range from Renaissance to Edwardian. Since the University also has a budding computer science department (which is a kind of magic in itself), Victorian Steampunk costumes (and gadgets) are also very appropriate. And, as always, vintage or modern evening dress is welcome.

There will (of course!) be a no-host bar and a light snack buffet (We know very well how seriously the Faculty of Unseen University take their meals, and your potluck contributions to the buffet are most welcome!).

To order advance tickets to the ball, please send a check for $15.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. To order tickets online, please go to the ball website at http://www.peers.org/unseen.html and click on the PayPal instructions for instructions. The deadline for purchasing advance tickets is Tuesday, April 28. Tickets will be sold at the door for $20.00 each.

If you have any questions or need more information, please call (510) 522-1731 or email peers@peers.org

And remember our school motto: "Nunc id vides; nunc ne vides!"

There they are, standing in line waiting for a ride, behind them is a man with 4 kids who is loudly telling the kids they need to push everyone out of their way when the gate opens and get on the next ride. These kids barreled through everyone in front of them, but two of them were indecisive and didn't get an animal - this man told them that since they weren't aggressive enough they didn't get to ride at all.
The Portsmouth Sinfonia was a real orchestra founded by a group of students at Portsmouth School of Art in Portsmouth, England, in 1970—however, the Sinfonia had an unusual entrance requirement. Players had to be either non-musicians, or if a musician, play an instrument that was entirely new to them. Among the founding members was one of their teachers, English composer Gavin Bryars. The orchestra started as a one-off, tongue-in-cheek performance art ensemble but became a cultural phenomenon over the following ten years, with concerts, record albums, a film and a hit single. The impact of the Portsmouth Sinfonia was considerable and their name and reputation has endured even though they last performed publicly in 1979.

Since a number of the ball organizers are Dicken Fair Folk and since a lot of the dances are done regularly at Fezziwig's, we thought you might feel at home at this event:

THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL BALL
Saturday, February 7, 2009
Location: San Mateo Masonic Temple Ballroom
100 N. Ellsworth Avenue (at Tilton), San Mateo, CA 94401
Doors Open: 6:45 p.m.
Dance Lesson: 7:00 p.m.
Dancing begins: 8:00 p.m.
Band: Bangers & Mash
Advance Tickets: $15.00 (by January 31, 2009)
Tickets: $20.00 at the door
Ball website: http://www.peers.org/Pimpernel.html

They seek him here,
They seek him there,
Those Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he in Heaven or is he in Hell?
That demmed, elusive Pimpernel?

Sir Percy and Lady Blakeney and her grace, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, request the pleasure of your company at a ball in honour of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. M. Chauvelin, the witty but ruthless French Ambassador, will be there. Will his arch-nemesis – the daring superhero and master of disguise, the Scarlet Pimpernel –
also make an appearance? And what will the beautiful Georgiana wear to the ball? Only time will tell.

The Duchess decrees that late 18th century, Directoire, or Regency costume is admired but not required (The year is 1792 but she won’t hold you to that) and, as usual, modern evening dress is also welcome (Sir Percy has just invented it, after all!).

The celebrated chamber ensemble Bangers & Mash plays an evening of gorgeous waltzes and dashing but elegant 18th century French and English country dances. There will be a pre-ball workshop in 18th century country dance and early Waltz – highly recommended since we’ll be teaching some of the ball dances during the class. Those of you planning to arrive fashionably late, however, can be assured that all country dances will also be briefly taught and called during the ball.

Punch and a complimentary light buffet of French and English snacks will be served (As always, your potluck contributions are much appreciated).

To order advance tickets for the ball, please send a check for $15.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. To order tickets online via PayPal, go to the ball site at http://www.peers.org/Pimpernel.html and click on the PayPal icon for instructions. The deadline for advance ticket purchases is Saturday, January 31. Tickets will be $20.00 at the door.

For costume inspiration and background, we recommend “The Duchess,” (2008), the 1931 version of “The Scarlet Pimpernel” with Leslie Howard, and the less faithful but very pretty 1982 version of “The Scarlet Pimpernel” with Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour, and, of course, “Blackadder 3,” the third and most hilarious season of the British miniseries. The original “Scarlet Pimpernel” novel by Baroness Orczy is a fun read and available both online and in most good public libraries and there are several sequels still in print.

If you have any questions, please email peers@peers.org or call (510) 522-1731.
On closing night, a grey morning coat was laid down near the end of the Absinthe Bar. This was after sweep btw. It has a grey velvet collar and dark grey piping on the lapels. Front left pocket, with two on the inside. Also, two buttons on the back ,one at each sleeve and the owner's name is inside, in permanent black ink. The size is large. As I mentioned before, the coat does have great sentimental value so ANY information or help in locating it would be greatly appreciated.
Also missing from the weekend before close, a black tophat, size Large with a narrow red and blue and silver christmas ribbon. Made by New York Hat Co.
