Hello, everyone.

As some of you know, I was fortunate enough to publish my novel earlier this year. "In The Eye of The Beholder" takes place in fin de siecle Paris and late Victorian London. Crazy - for 2009 - Publicity Idea!

( So of course I'm posting it on TRIBE , so fewer peeps see it , and thus less embarassament , in the event it's not such a good idea after all. )

As you should be aware , this month there's going to be a NEW movie version of "A Christmas Carol" ( All motion capture animations & Jim Carrey and 3-D & Mega-Screen complexity. )

Here's the rub...have you seen any of the print ads or posters ? Well , let me hip you , it's called "DISNEY's A Christmas Carol" ... apparently Ol' Chuckles Dickens DIDN'T write it after all! Doesn't that just bake your potato?

Now , I'm not suggesting anything with EVIL intent , but perhaps a nose pinching! Here's the idea: We get Dickens cast members in full regalia "picketing" the film ! ( Of course you'd need flyers to hand out. ).With signs reading: "Unfair To Charles Dickens!" , etc. Chanting "Bah Humbug!" etc.

Now , I'm not against Disney or the Film itself , just the fact that the title , will continue to make people even more illiterate in the arena of proper literature. ( Ask kids: who wrote "The Jungle Book" ? )

Even funnier - if you are among those whom remember the religious nuts picketing "Life of Brian" - would be to hand out little pamphlets , who's title reads " Who was Charles Dickens? " , and then have a list of facts ending with: "Author of the short story "A Christmas Carol".

Just a bug in the ear. ( I'm good at coming up with this sort of rubbish , but horrible at making it happen.)

Waltz the night away in a beautiful candlelit ballroom with the San Francisco Bay Area’s most glamorous Undead at the 16th Annual Le Bal des Vampires.

Suggested costume is evening dress of the century and country of your “rebirth.” This may include dress uniform, period costume (authentic or fantasy), vintage attire, or modern evening dress. There is no dress code for the ball (We certainly don’t expect Spike to attend in black tie!), but you will see some of the most gorgeous and creative costumes of the social season at Le Bal des Vampires. This year there will once again be simultaneous dancing on two separate floors:

Our band in the elegant upstairs ballroom is the stylish but always dashing chamber ensemble Bangers & Mash. As usual, haunting waltzes dominate the program, but the evening will feature a variety of dance music from across the centuries – from 18th century Baroque contredanses to 19th century Victorian rotary and Viennese waltzes, polkas, and mazurkas to elegant early 20th century tangos, blues, and fox trots and even some classic rock and roll Swing. Please note that the band’s first dance set will start at 7:45 pm sharp – 15 minutes earlier than usual. The dance sets will be unusually long, even by Bangers & Mash’s high standards, so if you do plan to dance, please be certain to wear shoes or boots you can actually dance in.

For those preferring a more modern style of dance music and free-style dancing, join us downstairs in Le Bal des Vampires’ Dracula’s Daughter’s Discotheque for a wonderfully varied repertoire of music to stir the blood and spirit from 6:30 p.m. to Midnight. Hosted by our principal DJ, Dark Moon, the disco also features a no-host (cash) bar and light refreshments for our mortal guests.

Our half-time show in the ballroom is a performance by the celebrated Le Theatre des Vampires. Not recommended for the faint of heart but highly recommended for fans of the genre.

Saucy French Postcards is casting for Greek Gods. Could you be Poseidon? Maybe Zeus? How about the Great God Pan? Okay, maybe a faun or a satyr? We’re looking for their feminine counterparts, as well. Fancy yourself as Demeter or Cybele? Or even Venus ... or Great Isis, Mistress of Magic. Perhaps one of the Graces, or a wild nymph or maenad?

CREW:
The show needs a number of unseen heroes, as well as the visible cast. These are the people who really make the thing happen. If you are interested in working the backstage crew, come see us. We are looking in particular for dressers to assist the cast. Don’t laugh, you! You might be surprised how many costumes are involved, and how much changing into and out of goes on. And how much quick movement of props and fluffing of drapery. Seriously, it’s hard work putting on this show!

BALTIMORE (AP) - For Edgar Allan Poe, 2009 has been a better year than 1849. After dozens of events in several cities to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, he's about to get the grand funeral that a writer of his stature should have received when he died.

One hundred sixty years ago, the beleaguered, impoverished Poe was found, delirious and in distress outside a Baltimore tavern. He was never coherent enough to explain what had befallen him since leaving Richmond, Va., a week earlier. He spent four days in a hospital before he died at age 40.

Poe's cousin, Neilson Poe, never announced his death publicly. Fewer than 10 people attended the hasty funeral for one of the 19th century's greatest writers. And the injustices piled on. Poe's tombstone was destroyed before it could be installed, when a train derailed and crashed into a stonecutter's yard. Rufus Griswold, a Poe enemy, published a libelous obituary that damaged Poe's reputation for decades.

But on Sunday, Poe's funeral will get an elaborate do-over, with two services expected to draw about 350 people each _ the most a former church next to his grave can hold. Actors portraying Poe's contemporaries and other long-dead writers and artists will pay their respects, reading eulogies adapted from their writings about Poe.

"We are following the proper etiquette for funerals. We want to make it as realistic as possible," said Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum...

...Baltimore has a decided advantage over the other cities that lay claim to Poe, notes BMA director Doreen Bolger. "We have the body," she said.

This week, that's true in more ways than one. Jerome said he's gotten calls from people who thought he was going to exhume Poe's remains and rebury them.

"When they dug up Poe's body in 1875 to move it, it was mostly skeletal remains," Jerome said. "I've seen remains of people who've been in the ground since that time period, and there's hardly anything left."

Instead, Jerome commissioned local special-effects artist Eric Supensky to create an eerily lifelike _ or deathlike _ mock-up of Poe's corpse.

"I got chills," Jerome said Monday upon seeing the body for the first time. "This is going to freak people out."

The body will lie in state for 12 hours Wednesday at the Poe House, a tiny rowhome in a gritty section of west Baltimore. Visitors are invited to pay their respects.

Following the viewing will be an all-night vigil at Poe's grave at Westminster Burying Ground. Anyone who attends will have the opportunity to deliver a tribute.

On Sunday morning, a horse-drawn carriage will transport the replica of Poe's body from his former home to the graveyard for the funeral.

Actor John Astin, best known as Gomez Addams on TV's "The Addams Family," will serve as master of ceremonies.

"It's sort of a way of saying, 'Well, Eddie, your first funeral wasn't a very good one, but we're going to try to make it up to you, because we have so much respect for you,'" said Astin, who toured as Poe for years in a one-man show.

The service won't be a total lovefest, however. The first eulogy will come from none other than Griswold.

"People are asking me, 'Jeff, why are you inviting him? He hated Poe!'" Jerome said. "The reason is, most of these people defended Poe in response to what he said about Poe's life, so we can't have this service without having old Rufus sitting in the front row, spewing forth his hatred."

Eulogies will follow from actors portraying, among others, Sarah Helen Whitman, a minor poet whom Poe courted after his wife's death, and Walt Whitman, who attended the dedication of Poe's new gravestone in 1875 but didn't feel well enough to speak. Writers and artists influenced by Poe, including Arthur Conan Doyle and Alfred Hitchcock, will also be represented.

Jerome expects to cry _ one reason he won't be speaking. Even his rivals are impressed with the scale of the tribute.

"Annoyed as I am with Baltimore sometimes, I have to give them credit," said Philadelphia-based Poe scholar Edward Pettit, who argues his city was of greater importance to Poe's life and literary career. "Baltimore has done an awful lot to maintain the legacy of Poe over the last 100-some years."

Foo of Dark Garden publishes steampunk/Victoriana/Goth/humor book... with tea and parasols.

Foo is part of the SF Dickens Faire (you may have seen her at Dark Garden) and she is publishing her first novel under the name and persona of "Gail Carriger". The book "Souless" comes out in a few days. It will help her ratings muchly if people buy it in the first couple days or pre-order from Amazon.

Foo is all kinds of awesome and I fully expect her book to be. It's already got a starred Publisher's Weekly review. For those of you who are sticklers for historical accuracy, let it be known that (as an archeologist and person who likes things just so) Foo is too. And bring the witty banter.

"Soulless" is due on the shelves in 6 days, Amazon ships in 4 (there is a kindle edition), and a few brick & mortars around the world have already pipped the post! It helps her rankings muchly the more people pre-order on Amazon or who buy the book on the first day- so if you're thinking about it, don't wait!

Semi OT: A little help for a wannabe newbie, please =)

Hi everyone,

My name's Kirilee and I've been lurking on this loverly community for a couple of months now. And I have a couple of questions to ask, if that's alright. I'm planning a year-long studenty trip next year and, ever since I discovered the amazing Dickens' fair, I've wanted to head over there and participate in 2010 (I know, I know - I'm a little early, but I'm planning my trip around this). The problem is: I live in Brisbane, Australia and would only be able to get to San Francisco right at the beginning of November. My question is this: Is there any way I can still be involved? Possibly even auditioning via youtube or something? I don't really care what role I would have, but I'd love to be part of the Otherbooks Nicholas Nickleby cast, as that's my absolute favourite Dickens'. Would I even be allowed to volunteer, coming from another country? And who should I get into contact with to confirm that I'd even have a chance (I'm a little shy to go straight to the top if I'd only be a nuisance)?

The Mikado is probably the best-loved and most well-known of all the Gilbert & Sullivan comic operas, and was featured in the Oscar-winning film Topsy Turvy. On the surface it appears to make fun of Japan and the Japanese, but the “Japan” of The Mikado is really a fantasy kingdom serving as a setting for a satire on English society and manners – satire that rings amazingly true today, in the US over a hundred years later.

Denise Gutierrez and Paul Sinasohn have created a one-hour adaptation of the show (similar to what has been done for Pirates of Penzance in the past.) which will be performed on the Victoria & Albert Music Hall Stage twice each Fair day.

Director Info: Denise Gutierrez is a theatrical professional, specializing in wigs and makeup. She has 30 years of experience with G&S shows, having worked with Lamplighters (the Bay Area’s premier G&S performing troupe) since 1979. She has been with San Francisco Opera for 26 years and has been a department head at Festival Opera (Walnut Creek) for the past 15 years. She is new to the Dickens Fair. Denise’s husband Paul Sinasohn has been performing and directing at the Dickens Fair since 2000 and has extensive G&S performing experience with Lamplighters and other Bay Area ensembles .

PRINCIPAL ROLES

We are looking for strong singer/actors for the following roles. Experience with Gilbert & Sullivan not necessary if you can sing and act the role. Some roles may be double-cast or understudied.

KO-KO * Patter Baritone * Lord High Executioner of the town of Titipu, guardian of (and in love with) the lovely young Yum-Yum.

NANKI-POO * Tenor * romantic lead. Son of the Mikado (Emperor), who has fled the imperial court and come to Titipu disguised as a wandering minstrel.

POOH-BAH * Bass/Baritone * Titipu’s Lord High Everything Else, an extremely haughty and exclusive person.

THE MIKADO * Bass/Baritone * The fierce emperor of Japan, whose governing philosophy is “let the punishment fit the crime.”

PISH-TUSH * Baritone * Strong chorister who sings in “Big Black Block” trio. Remaining solos have been cut in this adaptation.

YUM-YUM * Soprano* Ko-Ko’s ward, lovely, irresistible, and fully aware of her charms. In love with Nanki-Poo.

PITTI-SING * Mezzo * Yum-Yum’s somewhat bold and irreverent friend.
PEEP-BO * Soprano * Another of Yum-Yum’s friends. Member of the chorus.
KATISHA * Contralto * an older lady in love with Nanki-Poo and determined to get him back at any cost.

CHORUS OF SCHOOLGIRLS, NOBLES, GUARDS AND TOWNSPEOPLE: As with most Gilbert & Sullivan shows, the chorus is a very important part of the action, and has much stage time and wonderful music. We need 2 each sopranos, altos, tenors and basses.

AUDITION INFORMATION:

Auditions will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

AUDITIONS ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please send an EMAIL to regfoghorn@yahoo. com requesting an audition appointment. Give your first and second choices of times (i.e. first choice – between 3:30 – 4:00; second choice – around 6 PM). You will be notified by return email of the time and place of your audition appointment. If you do not have email, you may call 510-368-1178 – but email communication is greatly preferred.

PREPARE A SONG: Please come to the preliminary audition with one song in English, preferably from opera or operetta, that you feel will show off your voice well. An accompanist will be provided. Bring sheet music (if possible) in the key in which you will sing. Also bring your calendar so that you can give us any conflicts that you may have during the rehearsal period. Headshot and resume are optional. If you are needed for a callback, you will be notified.

PRODUCTION INFORMATION

THERE WILL BE TWO PERFORMANCES EACH DAY OF FAIR: sometime between 11:30AM and 5:00PM Cast members may be needed to help move set pieces on and off stage before or after the show.

REHEARSALS will begin in late September. Music rehearsals are set to accommodate everyone’s schedule; in the past this has meant some Friday nights for music rehearsals. Staging/blocking rehearsals are scheduled to start the first weekend of Dickens Fair workshops, Nov. 7/8, but may start sooner if we have an appropriate location.

THE ABBREVIATED VOCAL SCORE and script will be made available to you; if you wish to buy one on your own and mark it up, please get the G. Schirmer edition.

PLEASE NOTE: Cast members may be asked to donate a few hours to help with costumes, etc. Some cast members will need to help move the minimal set pieces on and off stage before/after the show. We will be asking cast members to wear part of their normal Dickens Fair costume as part of their Mikado costumes. Cast members will need to provide their own hairpieces needed to achieve proper Victorian hairstyles. Ladies must have petticoats, not hoops, available due to stage space limitations.

IF YOU ARE NEW TO DICKENS FAIR: Note that you will need to acquire or create a Victorian-era costume, complete with period hair, shoes, and head covering. This can be done relatively inexpensively, and advice is available, as are reference materials. Also, there is a $10 participant fee for each performer covering the run of Fair, this basically covers the cost of onsite EMT and general insurance. Parking at the Cow Palace costs $10 per day, but you can purchase a run-of-fair parking pass for about $55 (a very good bargain).

The Dickens Christmas Fair runs Friday November 27th and weekends through December 20th. I am wanting to take some orders for vests for Dickens. If you have been into Schulps Pottery and Knives you have seen my work I have made all of the ones that the guys are wearing. They will be 100% wool esterior (unless otherwise requested) with 100% cotton lining (again, unless other wise requested) They will have 2 pokets, a collar and 5 or 6 buttons (depending on size) I am willing to do custom fit. Ren faire and Dicken's Outfits

I am moving out of the country and have many Ren Faire and Dicken Outfits and accessories to sell. These outfits are from Pendragon, Tickle, Steven Overstreet, Whimsy, Etc. As-Salāmu `Alayka -- Mullah Don Brown
It is with sorrow that I report the passing of Don Brown, The Mullah (and Founder of the Tea House of Mullah Nasrudin's Donkey and Mr. Brown's), from this earthly coil. Don died peacefully in his sleep this morning (June 9, 2009) at about 10:55am. One minute he was there and the next he slipped quietly away.

Don's last days were made as sweet at possible by the many friends who were able to visit and send cards and emails. Kristi and Jeremy McMaster organized his care and are mostly truly his spiritual children.

A Little Shop in Marin Called Portobello Road

Portobello Rd, 1000 - 5th Ave, San Rafael, Ca 94901 415-257-6300 is run by a couple that used to have a shop on Portobello Rd in London.
They have a couple items that are historic, including some 300 year old gambling tiles/chips and if I don't buy them all some vellum deeds and other legal documents from the 1800's and before. They are planning on going out of business, but haven't set a date for it. So, those interested in that sort of thing, might want to go over there.

Or you might want to just go visit them to hear a light accent. They don't have a hard accent.

Someone I'm debating in another on-line forum offered the following "Dickens" claims and quote:

...and could check if Dickens actually said anything like this.

Why my doubts? Because Chas.Dickens left no doubt to anyone who read "American Notes" that he was absolutely appalled by slavery, and as pro-abolitionist as the the day was long.

I think I saw Kate Nickelby, Pip, and Miss Haversham, plus a few others, but I was really wondering (just having seen the new BBC Little Dorrit) if there was a Monsier Rigaud/Blandois at Dickens? If so, I haven't noticed him yet. He would be a fun villain to play, wouldn't he?

Arch-Chancellor Mustrum Ridcully of Unseen University requests the pleasure of your company at a grand ball in the University's Great Hall in honour of its current crop of graduating wizards (those who have actually managed to survive until graduation, that is!).

We are once again proud to announce that the evenings' guest band is Avalon Rising - one of the most magical dance bands on this or any other world - equally at home playing Victorian and vintage ballroom dance music, hauntingly beautiful Celtic and Celtic Fusion, and Renaissance rock (Yes, you heard that right!).

We will be dancing waltzes, polkas, schottisches, mazurka waltzes, reels, contradances, and other popular couple and set dances of the 19th century; some elegant Renaissance dances; and even some "music with rocks in it," as the Arch-Chancellor himself describes it. While some of the dances are choreographed set dances (which will be taught or called), others are open to free-form improvisation (Everything from free-style rock to Victorian polkas and Irish polka sets are some times danced to the very same music when Avalon Rising plays. We're not sure how, but think it's some form of magic!).

Fantasy costumes from the Disc World novels of Terry Pratchett, fantasy costumes from any universe, and, of course, magical or wizard costumes are admired but not required. Yes, here's your chance to sport your Harry Potter costumes! Guests may also come in period costume and still be in style. In the city of Ankh-Morpork, fashions range from Renaissance to Edwardian. Since the University also has a budding computer science department (which is a kind of magic in itself), Victorian Steampunk costumes (and gadgets) are also very appropriate. And, as always, vintage or modern evening dress is welcome.

There will (of course!) be a no-host bar and a light snack buffet (We know very well how seriously the Faculty of Unseen University take their meals, and your potluck contributions to the buffet are most welcome!).

Dickens Carousel - boy are people rude!

I love the carousel and hope it will be around for many more years - my kids love it too...

This is something that happened this last Dec. when my family came to the fair and took my twins to ride the carousel. I find it hard to believe that people this rude exist, but it does explain why we can't seem to manage world peace.

There they are, standing in line waiting for a ride, behind them is a man with 4 kids who is loudly telling the kids they need to push everyone out of their way when the gate opens and get on the next ride. These kids barreled through everyone in front of them, but two of them were indecisive and didn't get an animal - this man told them that since they weren't aggressive enough they didn't get to ride at all.

OMG - what kind of people is he building for the next generation??

The San Francisco Bay Area Celtic Music and Dance Festival is happening this Saturday, February 21st at the Oakland Veterans Hall 200 Grand Avenue Oakland, 94610, X Harrison.

BayCeltic is an annual reunion of Bay Area Celtic musicians, singers, dancers and performers.

We have a wide range of very popular and well established musicians and performers.

The Black Brothers, Tempest, Molly's Revenge, Cullan's Hounds,Avalon Rising, Steve Baughman,and Siamsa, a bay area Celtic dance performance group, are in the main Ballroom.

In the musical showcase, new and emerging bands and musicians are are Three Mile Stone, Jim Nelson,Patrice Haan,Megan McLaughlin,Valerie Rose,West of Shannon,Susan Mashiyama and Lani Herrmann.

Steve Baughman will perform and lead the music session afterwards.

Dancing in the Dance Hall are an Irish Ceilidh with Ammy Hill, Irish Set dancing with Michael Murphy, hard shoes introductory dance class with Shirleigh Brannan.

We will have waltz and polka and irish dancing at 10pm to Culann's Hounds.

Fine Gentlemen's Apparel indeed!

First of all for those of you who did not find the time to make it into Mr. Jeffrie's shop you truly missed out on a wonderful experience. Mr. Jeffries and his accommodating staff not only do superb work but despite accepting modern payments such as credit cards they still manage to stay perfectly in character. They are also gentlemen, offering me both a chair and beverage because of the unseasonably warm winter we had in our beautiful London. His fine gentlemen's apparel is just that. The clothing that I commissioned for my husband just arrived and is absolutely beyond anything I could have envisioned. The workmanship is superb, the fabric is of the highest quality, and the accuracy is dead on. I can not recommend Mr. Jeffries and his lovely establishment enough.

The Portsmouth Sinfonia was a real orchestra founded by a group of students at Portsmouth School of Art in Portsmouth, England, in 1970—however, the Sinfonia had an unusual entrance requirement. Players had to be either non-musicians, or if a musician, play an instrument that was entirely new to them. Among the founding members was one of their teachers, English composer Gavin Bryars. The orchestra started as a one-off, tongue-in-cheek performance art ensemble but became a cultural phenomenon over the following ten years, with concerts, record albums, a film and a hit single. The impact of the Portsmouth Sinfonia was considerable and their name and reputation has endured even though they last performed publicly in 1979.

The Duchess decrees that late 18th century, Directoire, or Regency costume is admired but not required (The year is 1792 but she won’t hold you to that) and, as usual, modern evening dress is also welcome (Sir Percy has just invented it, after all!).

The celebrated chamber ensemble Bangers & Mash plays an evening of gorgeous waltzes and dashing but elegant 18th century French and English country dances. There will be a pre-ball workshop in 18th century country dance and early Waltz – highly recommended since we’ll be teaching some of the ball dances during the class. Those of you planning to arrive fashionably late, however, can be assured that all country dances will also be briefly taught and called during the ball.

Punch and a complimentary light buffet of French and English snacks will be served (As always, your potluck contributions are much appreciated).

The original “Scarlet Pimpernel” novel by Baroness Orczy is a fun read and available both online and in most good public libraries and there are several sequels still in print.

Another lost item or two....

Ever the optimist, I had to repost this appeal since my first post had a bit of an error in it.
On closing night, a grey morning coat was laid down near the end of the Absinthe Bar. This was after sweep btw. It has a grey velvet collar and dark grey piping on the lapels. Front left pocket, with two on the inside. Also, two buttons on the back ,one at each sleeve and the owner's name is inside, in permanent black ink. The size is large. As I mentioned before, the coat does have great sentimental value so ANY information or help in locating it would be greatly appreciated.
Also missing from the weekend before close, a black tophat, size Large with a narrow red and blue and silver christmas ribbon. Made by New York Hat Co.
Hopefully one of you kind people has one of these items and will make us very happy indeed.

Lost and not found, so far

My small white handkerchief trimmed in Brussels lace. Possibly lost under the bleachers at the V & A (at least, I noticed it missing as I was leaving the show, and the theater was too dim and crowded to check.).

I checked the Lost and Found at Patterson and Sons at the end of Sunday. No luck.

It has a lot of sentimental value to me.

My Praises to La Legion Fantastique!

I have to say that I think the addition of La Legion to the Dickens Fair is really a wonderful thing. I was noticing a very distinct crowd of customer types sporting the steam punk image, all seeming to have a good time. At one point I was out front waiting for friends and met several of them waiting in line. I engaged them and they were very interested in seeing La Legion, so I gave them directions to get there, and a bit later sure enough ran into them at La Legion. I think its something that should be encouraged as it seems to draw in more people. Remember Red Barn has to pay the bills so the more people we get coming to the fair the better.

I also found those working there to be bright, engaging and very talented. They really put themselves out there and it was a joy to see.

Our Seventh Annual New Year's Eve Waltz Ball. Always fun, always a great time, a wonderful way to ring in the new year. Sells out every year. 300 attendance.

Brassworks returns for a 7th time playing waltzes, polkas, Congress of Vienna and a few other dances such as tango, latin and swing.
From 9pm to 12:30 am
About 250 attend each year.

Always located at the National Historic Landmark the Chevron Auditorium in the International House 2299 Piedmont Berkeley Ca X Bancroft. A gorgeous 3,500 square foot hardwood floor high ceilinged Morrocan style ballroom with additional socializing in the Slusser room.

Tickets are $25 per person at the door

Formal attire strongly preferred, but dressy is fine too.

The forecast calls for likely rain tomorrow, probably just as we're arriving at the Cow Palace, and again just as we're leaving. Drive extra carefully and don't forget umbrellas.

While we all know that being wet and cold can't GIVE you a cold, it can zap your immune systems so bugs find it easier to get in, and make the bugs you've already got harder to shake off.

Need advise on a cloak

I want it at $70 (apprx. $12 shipping - so $82 total). I called 'em and asked for their lightest material. They said they could make it out of a cotton twill(?) or was it tweed (?). Anyway, it would take 'em 4 weeks. Too long for this season.

I want theatrical material, not real life material, for DCF. But I'm not sure what the most realistic material is?

Any seamstresses out there wanna make a quick buck? I'd like to find one for the remainder of this season but fear I'm too late. Whats best material for theatricallity (sp.?)?

Memorial for Sully

It has been brought to my attention that I somehow managed NOT to get this info out...

There is a memorial for my dad, Gordon Sullivan (Sully) this Saturday December 6 after hours at the Dickens fair. We will be gathering at the print shop right after closing. (about 7:20ish)
Please bring your favorite memories of him to share with all assembled.
I'm sorry that this is getting out so late, but I have been concentrating on the folks NOT from fair, and not so much the folks that are already there. Please, if you knew him, come.

2008 Dickens Fair Costume Contest Information:

11:00-1:00pm – There will be sign ups for the Costume Contest at a table in Pickwick Square – look for the sign! You must sign up before 1pm if you wish to participate in the contest. Costumes should date to the 1840s-1860s and will be judged on Historical Appropriateness, Quality of Workmanship and Completeness of Outfit. To qualify for the costume contest, you must have sewn the costume yourself (however, you may have someone else model your work).

1:00pm – Meet with the judges in Pickwick Square to view your costume and talk about your work.

2:00pm – Costumes will be shown and winners will be announced on the Paddy West Stage in the London Docks area. Winners will be announced immediately following the show!

How to Get the Most Out of the Dickens Fair

I am trying to drum up customers for Dickens Fair on several of my group e-lists. I am going to write a post about "How to Get the Most Out of Dickens Fair" or maybe "How to Enjoy Dickens Fair." This is meant for people who may never have gone to something like this, or who have, and didn't really understand what was going on. I'm writing it because I remember going to Fair(e)s in the past, and not really getting what I was supposed to "do." Now that I have gotten involved, I realize that if I had been told some ground rules, I would have gotten a lot more out of it.

I would like to get some input from you guys about what to include in my post about how to enjoy the Fair. Do you have a sentence or two to add to my post? Any edits of what I have written are welcome, too.

So far, I have:

"Don't be shy about interacting with the actors. Try not to be intimidated if you aren't in costume, or can't match their accents. We LOVE it if people interact with us!! That's why we're here! Unlike in "real life," it is not rude to listen in on our conversations!

There are a couple instances where there are actual scripted scenes, but they are pretty obvious, and if you see one, wait until it's over, then go up to the actor right after and ask them questions about what is happening.

The actors try hard to stay "in character" so if you talk to a "rough" looking character, you will get a "rough" response, and if you walk up to a "genteel" character, you will get a "genteel" response.

If you are shy, start with asking a gentleman for the time, and then comment on his watch...or compliment a lady on her hat, and ask where she shopped for it. Go with the flow, and enjoy yourself!

And try to resist the urge to flit from one thing to the next. I personally think you'll get more out of things if you spend some time at each attraction."

Faire Garb Rentals?

Greetings! I'm taking my boyfriend to the Dicken's Faire for his very first time this Dec. 15th. Until I am certain he is "into" the Faire, I'd rather not plunk down a lot of cash making him a suitable outfit. He's a bit of a clothing snob, however, so the usual "dark slacks, white shirt, vest " thing won't really get him excited. I'd like to deck him out nicely and help him with getting in the spirit of things.

Does anyone know of a costume rental place that has a GOOD selection of appropriate clothing, without being outrageously priced? My bf is 6'4" and a 40" chest and wears an extra large hat size--so it would have to be a place with a good selection in order to find something that will fit him.

Or perhaps someone on this list has some older garb they would be willing to part (for a reasonable price) with that would fit him?
