The Emerald City Ball
(sponsored by the Period Events & Entertainments Re-Creation Society)
Saturday, July 5, 2008
Doors Open at 6:45 p.m.
Dance Lesson: 7:00 p.m. (Edwardian and Ragtime Dances)
Dancing begins: 8:00 p.m.
Band: The Divertimento Dance Orchestra
Tickets at the Door: $20.00
Ball Website: http://peers.org/emerald.html

We're off to see the Wizard at a ball in the glorious capital city of Oz. Come join us in honouring the singular courage of Dorothy Gale and her intrepid companions as they prepare to embark on their dangerous mission to the West.

There is definitely no need to stress about costumes for this ball. You have a huge range of choices: Fantasy costume, period costume (Medieval to Edwardian), or a combination of the two is admired but not required and, of course, green attire and costumes inspired by the Oz universe will be very welcome. While the ball is technically set in 1900, the citizens of Oz wear a variety of costumes ranging from Medieval gowns and tunics all the way up to late Victorian and Edwardian frocks and frock coats. Vintage or modern evening dress is also appropriate since the most unusual visitors do occasionally arrive in the Land of Oz.

Our Emerald City band is the Divertimento Dance Orchestra, a vintage dance band known for their elegance, authenticity and versatility. Dance music for the evening will range from graceful Edwardian ballroom dance music to the Great Wizard’s own favorite Ragtime tunes from his distant native star Omaha, Amerika. Dance waltzes, polkas, schottisches, reels, contradances, mixers and other popular turn of the century dances as well as the newer Ragtime one-step, two-step and tango. The Wizard will provide music for every taste (If you’re familiar with the 1939 film version of “The Wizard of Oz,” you will definitely recognize some of the tunes.).

For those wishing a brush-up in the latest dances, the pre-ball dance class will focus on the “new” dances of the Edwardian and Ragtime age: The lively One-Step, the sinuous One-Step Tango, the beautiful Hesitation Waltz, and the Turning Two-Step, an smooth and fun 1890’s alternative to the Polka.

The ball will also feature our famous No-Host (cash) bar, serving both alcoholic and soft drinks. The Wizard will also provide a complimentary light snack buffet (Your potluck contributions to the buffet are most welcome. The Emerald City is very expensive to maintain!).

For more information, please call (510) 522-1731 or email peers@peers.org before Saturday.

Driving Directions:
Take the 3rd Avenue exit off 101, going west into San Mateo. Follow 3rd Avenue across the railroad tracks and turn right on Ellsworth Avenue. The Masonic Lodge - a white three-story Colonial style Edwardian building - is located on the corner of Ellsworth and Tilton.

There will be a pre-ball dance lesson at 7:00 pm and, as usual, all set dances will be briefly taught or called.

Suggested costume is mid-Victorian evening dress (1850’s or ‘60’s) or modern evening dress. European or Southern gentlemen in uniform are also most welcome. As usual, however, costumes are admired, not required.

Punch and a light snack buffet will be served throughout the evening (Your potluck contributions to the buffet during these difficult times are greatly appreciated!).

To order advance tickets for the ball, please send a check for $15.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. To order tickets online, please go to the ball website at http://peers.org/gwtw.html , scroll down to the PayPal icon, and click on it for directions. Tickets will be sold at the door for $20.00 each.

For more information, please call (510) 522-1731 or email peers@peers.org.

Hello all,

I'd like to announce, with lots of excitement (and a little bit of "eek!") that my partner Kelly McCubbin and I are launching our own theatre and music production company: Penny Dreadful Theatricals!

We'll be making our maiden voyage this summer - we are currently in script development for a 1940's-style staged radio show, which will run at The Exit Theatre in San Francisco Aug. 2 & 3 / 9 & 10. In the long term, our plan is to add to the diversity of Bay Area theatre by developing and producing original theatre works, music shows, and lots of lovely, strange stuff in between.

So, logically enough, I wanted to send this audition notice out to our amazing community of performers. Feel free to send it to talented friends who might be interested. We're looking especially hard for young-faced folks who might be able to play 'The Kid' - as long as they're over 18 or has a parent willing to accompany them at rehearsals.

Kelly is handling auditions, so if you have interest, please contact him at the email addy listed in the notice.

And wish us luck!
-Laura Brueckner
(Eileen Dover, Broadside Music Hall)
(formerly HRH Queen Victoria)

** ** ** ** ** **
AUDITION NOTICE

Kelly McCubbin and Penny Dreadful Theatricals are holding auditions for The Ukeapocalypse Radio Hour, a recreation of a 40’s-era radio show, performed in front of a theater audience. The first act is a fully-staged, behind-the-scenes comedy with music (in the tempo of “The Jack Benny Show”) about a has-been director and his hapless cast trying to stage a science fiction radio show. The second act is the radio show itself, performed by the actors in the style of a live broadcast. No pay.

Auditions
May 31st, callbacks June 1.
Send acting resume to Kelly for audition appointment.
Contact email: Kelly@ukeapocalypse.com.

Performance Dates
August 1, 2 (plus matinee), 8, 9 (plus matinee)
Rehearsal Dates
3-4 rehearsals weekly, beginning mid-June
Performance Venue
Exit Theatre, San Francisco

Roles
M - Toby/Captain – Insane method actor/Petty, greedy starship captain
F - Roz/Erno – Extraordinarily efficient stage manager/Extraordinarily efficient starship first mate
They're not all going to be Dickens, but they're cute to look at, and if you want to print and bind them as well, they can make good props.

I've screened them a bit to make sure they're generally within the Dickens period, unless noted. At the same time, I'm not screening for content; please remember that around this time people first began to view children as something *other* than very tiny adults, so some of the material might seem strange or morbid children's reading for us. (See The Death of Cock Robin, etc.)

If you're interested in viewing by genre, here's a good place to look:

Dear Cow Palace supporter and missive-lister,

Our combined efforts have paid off! TODAY, the California State Senate Agriculture Committee approved amendments to SB1527 that remove the Cow Palace from harms' way. All that remains of this nasty piece of legislation is the issue of selling or leasing 13 acres of the "upper" Cow Palace parking lot.

Thank you!!!! ...you wrote letters, made phone calls, tolerated continual email updates and requests for action. I know I speak for the Board of Directors of the Cow Palace, it's management and staff and MANY others when I say once again THANK YOU! (we delivered a bound booklet to each of the 5 Senators this morning with over 2,800 signatures - including all the personal notes people wrote on our petition page. This should give the Senators a warm fuzzy as they read some of them tonight with their warm milk)

So... Now what? It is completely over? No. There are a couple of things left to do:

1) Join the Friends of the Cow Palace. Ready? "Poof" You are now a friend of the Cow Palace. If you don't want to stay a member, you must opt out by saying 'no moo' in the subject line of any future email you receive from the "Friends".

It will be the mission of the Friends of the Cow Palace to foster the future success of the venue through sharing ideas, keeping in touch, and yes...buying tickets to the occasional show.

The "Friends" will have an important role to play going forward because, if the Cow Palace does not operate in the black within the next 5 years, it could still be declared surplus and sold for condos. The only good thing about this whole thing is that in a very awkward way, Senator Yee shined a light on the fact that we have all been taking the Cow Palace for granted. "It will always be there" was our attitude. Not so. We now know that unless those of us who care about it - (this big lovable concrete set of buildings and parking lots were we get to play, dance, sing, party, and just goof off) - and continue to find ways to keep it growing and healthy, we will loose it. Just say moo.

2) Our core team (you know who you are) will be going to Sacramento a couple more times to advocate for the lease of the 13 acre parking lot rather than an outright sale as the bill as currently worded. This is important because the stream of income from the lease will pay for upgrades and operations for 60 years or more while money from a sale, once spent, will be gone forever. We will let you know if we need your help on this in any way.

Once again, THANK YOU!!!! (and huzzah)

Kevin

We won't exactly call it "Fezziwigs 1931" but the usual suspects will be there! Here's our latest ball write-up.

THE CHICAGO ALL-THAT-JAZZ BALL
(sponsored by PEERS - the Period Events & Entertainments Re-Creation Society)
Saturday, May 3, 2008
Location: San Mateo Masonic Temple
100 N. Ellsworth Avenue, San Mateo
Doors Open: 6:45 p.m.
Vintage Dance Lesson: 7:00- 8:00 pm.
Formal Dancing begins: 8:00 p.m.
Band: Lee PressOn and the Nails
Tickets: $15.00 in advance (by April 26); $20.00 at the door
Ball Website: http://peers.org/chicago.html

Rouge your knees, roll your stockings down, start the car, and come join us and host Billy Flynn, Esquire, at the hottest party in Chicago for All That Jazz! PEERS is proud (and truly amazed) to announce that the evening's band will be the one, the only, the incomparable Lee Presson and the Nails.

1920’s or 30’s costume or vintage or modern evening dress (white or black tie optional) is admired, but not required. The year is 1931 but we won't hold you to that.

The music will range from elegant vintage ballroom dance music (waltzes, tangos, fox trots, and even polkas!) to cool blues and hot Swing of the 1920's and early ‘30's – perhaps with a few musical surprises along the way. For guests wishing to brush up on their vintage dance skills, there will be a pre-ball dance lesson in vintage Foxtrot and Swing at 7:00 p.m. with Persephone and Charles. Even if you’re a novice, they’ll soon have you gliding along the floor like young Fred Astaire and swinging like a gate.

Intermission entertainment includes both a half-time floor show and DJ dance music for you insatiable dancers. To fortify us for these vigorous dance sets, a complimentary light snack buffet will be served throughout the evening. (In our current Depression, your potluck contributions are always appreciated!).

Special Announcement from Mr. Lee Presson himself: “The first 100 people who attend the May Chicago Ball will get a free Lee Presson and the Nails CD.”

To order advance tickets, please send a check for $15.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. To order tickets online via PayPal, please go to the ball website at http://peers.org/chicago.html, scroll down, and click on the PayPal icon for instructions. Tickets will be sold at the door for $20.00 each.
For information, please call (510) 522-1731 or email peers@peers.org.

Driving Directions:
The state Senate's Agriculture Committee, meeting in Sacramento, approved legislation that would allow the state to begin negotiating the sale of a 13-acre parking lot along Geneva Avenue to Daly City, which wants to put a supermarket on the site.

Directors of the state-owned facility, along with groups that have used the arena over the years, fought Yee's original plan to declare the entire facility surplus, which would have allowed the land to be sold and the Cow Palace to be razed.

Cow Palace officials had been negotiating with Daly City over use of the parking lot, arguing that the land should be leased, with the ongoing flow of cash going to upgrade the arena.

Yee's compromise measure calls for the state Department of Food and Agriculture to negotiate a sale price for the parking lot. Money from the sale would go to the state fair system, which oversees the Cow Palace, and could be used for improvements there, a spokesman for Yee said.
Dear Cow Palace supporter,

THANK YOU for signing the petition, writing letters, making calls and attending meetings. The full petition has been delivered to the Senate Agricultural Committee with nearly 2,000 signatures! However...

The bill to kill the Cow Palace is NOT nearly dead. The Senate Agriculture Committee (of only 5 members) will finally vote THIS Tuesday April 15th, and it could go either way!

This is a crucial time for each of us to act (again). If we don't apply every ounce of pressure RIGHT NOW to kill SB1527 in committee, it could gain momentum and be much more difficult to defeat later.

Here's how:

1) Attend the hearing THIS Tuesday 4/15 at the State Capitol Building Room 113 at 9:00 IF you can, but EITHER way...

2) You guessed it. Write another letter. HOWEVER, this one can be very simple: (cut and paste, print and fax)

To: Hon. Abel Maldonado (Chairman, Senate Committee on Agriculture), Hon. Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny (Vice Chairwoman, Senate Committee on Agriculture), and the Hon. Senators Sheila Kuehl, Jeff Denham and Dean

Dear Senators Maldonado, Ducheny, Denham, Kuehl and Florez:

I oppose SB1527 and urge you to support the 13-acre win-win alternative that provides retail for the local community and a bright future for the Cow Palace. Senator Yee can be a uniter, not a divider"

Sincerely...
(be sure to include your address, especially if you live locally)

Put it in your own words, if you like, or send a long letter from the heart,
but...

FAX it TODAY - (even if you have done one before) to the following 6 fax numbers (The 5 Senators on the Committee and Senator Yee):

Maldonado 916-445-8081

So here are what I've come up with so far:
Permitable for public assembly, also for food and alcohol consumption
Large enough (I believe that we are currently using about 60,000 sq. ft.)
Secure
Reasonable rent
Able to be occupied for 8 to 10 weeks
Good parking (possibly optional, certainly the parking gods did not look favorably on pier 45)
Reasonably close to major freeways
In or near San Francisco (this one may be optional, but it wasn't the cold that made freezer fair bad, it was the lack of customers)
Able to have the set installed and taken out with out worrying about the structure of the building too much.
Be free of NIMBY issues (goes with permitted uses usually)
Be able to be darkened for theatrical lighting (in other words we don't want great amounts of daylight all day)
allow for acoustic separation of the various areas.

Secondary considerations
Be able to re-use the existing sets (this is a cost issue)
Easily accessible via public transit (the cow palace is not what most people consider easily accessible) (if the parking sucks, then transit is very important)

what else?

Our very own Scrooge, Martin Harris has emailed and asked me to update you all on his recent battle with prostate cancer. He just got an email from his surgeon saying that his latest blood test showed a PSA of 0.1, which means that cancer is undetectable, but if he hadn't acted quickly and pushed for further tests, that might not have been the case.

From Martin:

"This is Scrooge giving his most severe warning ever, having literally been to his own grave stone and back, to warn his fellow men where ever they may be, to not ignore this increasing problem that is taking out one man an hour in England alone, because there really are no symptoms to draw attention to this Silent Killer. You can understand with time off for recovery, I've felt it my mission to publicize this information and hence request that you send this out to our Fair family in the hope of helping raise awareness. I've attached an article that I wrote for the local press and have been interviewed on BBC Radio with more chances of publicity yet to come acting on behalf of the Prostate Cancer Charity.

Don't Hesitate Or It Could Be Too Late
It was only last summer, when I was feeling quite well, that I remembered having a slight fluctuation in my waterworks for about a month back in the spring. Being of that age when they talk about the possibility of Prostate Cancer, (of which I knew absolutely nothing,) I decided to go to the doctor to have a check up. The blood test revealed a PSA of 4.6 to which the doctor advised, Not to worry, let’s do another blood test in 9 months to see if there’s any change.

That clearly seemed the easy option but I felt driven somehow to know more. So after a digital inspection, I had a biopsy which indicated that I had Prostate Cancer with a Gleeson Count of 3 plus 4 equaling 7 out of 10, (which is apparently better than a 4 plus 3, indicating the rate of growth.) I was told, It’s contained and small as we’ve caught it in the early stages, so you have a year to do something about it.

After consultations with Oncology, Urology and Laparoscopic, I decided to go to Kings College Hospital for the Laparoscopic surgery in the skilled hands of their leading surgeon, considered the best in this country. However he thought I should have surgery in only 6 months, so an appointment was set for early January, in two and half months to be safe. (I later found out that he is the best in the world, giving demonstration surgeries in many other countries including North America. I must say that the staff at Kings Hospital is brilliant! Thank God for the NHS!!)
Nervous? You bet but in the hands of the best I felt somewhat comforted. The results of the pre-op blood test showed that the PSA had gone up to 4.7 but they said anything less than 5 is still well contained and not to worry.

On January 11th at 8 am I went into surgery and was out of it for over 4 hours. The surgeons said that the cancer was much bigger than they had expected and they had to cut extremely close to the outer membrane, even shaving off some nerves to make sure they got all of the cancer. The biopsy of the prostate revealed that there was one point where it was about to break through. In other words, I was literally right at the edge before it would metastases!

When I asked about the original diagnosis of Not to worry, do another blood test in 9 months, the surgeon said in 9 months it would have been too late! Regarding the advise You’ve got a year to do something, he said usually they recommend a year if they catch it early, but I was at the other end of the year and had no time left!

Clearly the current tests may not reveal the whole story.
The surgeon agreed and said he would contact the local doctors using my case to review their basis for diagnosis. He encouraged me to publicize my situation and thanked me for doing so, as it highlights the importance for men over 40 to get a check up and if there is any doubt, to be proactive for their own lives sack and ask for a biopsy. In America they have regular check-ups as standard practice, so you need to be assertive with the NHS, as wonderful as they are.

In my follow up consultations with the surgeon, it was said that Prostate Cancer really doesn’t have any symptoms and at best may manifest itself with some unusual urinal behaviour including traces of blood. In my case, there were no obvious symptoms, which is the norm, hence it’s nick-name, The Silent Killer.

Just a few years ago they used to have a benchmark of PSA 11 before investigating the prostate, but as cases have rapidly increased, it has been dropped down to 5. Kings College Hospital being on the cutting edge of prostate cancer research, (pun intended,) have recently lowered their own benchmark figure from PSA 4.5 to 3.5 and now it’s 2.5 especially for younger men in their 40s, in an effort to catch it early!
Apparently if found in much older men, it’s not so much of a problem and as doctors will recite, most men die with prostate cancer, not of it. It is known to be very slow growing, but there are exceptions especially in younger men, as I found out!

Naturally I had lots of questions. How long had this cancer been growing in me? What would have happened if I hadn’t felt driven to take myself to the doctors for a check up, (especially as there were no symptoms?) When and what would manifest itself first to indicate that something was very wrong and would it have been too late?

Yes they have many different ways to deal with prostate cancer that has metastases but once it breaks through into the lymph glands or the bones, what then? Today I would have continued to be a very healthy specimen for my age, eating and exercising better than most, unaware of what’s going on down in the fire below.

Fact: In the UK every hour a man dies of prostate cancer, usually because he didn’t know of the danger or if he did, was too afraid to go and have a check up!

In retrospect I realized my need to know more when first offered the easy option choice between, relax and have another blood test in 9 months or face intrusive anal-inspections, was God’s Guidance as part of his plan, to let me go through all this, so that I could still be here today to encourage those afraid to ask, to be bold and do so!

Well coincidentally, The Prostate Cancer Charity who head up the loud proclamation to all men to be assertive about their own health, are organizing Prostate Cancer Awareness. (Many famous sportsmen and celebrities are involved assisted by Marks and Spencers annual promotion.) They are deadly serious about helping men who won’t help themselves, using their slogan, Real Men Do Something About It! This is a clear statement drawing attention to the alarming facts that Prostate Cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK with 35,000 men diagnosed annually.

But many don’t get diagnosed, hence, one dies every hour….the next could be you!

To illustrate just how serious this is, I have explained my own scary wake up call to a many friends, who have admitted they’d be too afraid to go and find out and would rathere not know! I was gobsmacked!
I hope you can understand now why I implore men over 40 to contact: their doctor or www.Prostate-Cancer.org.uk or Awareness-week@prostate-cancer.org.uk or
Prostate Cancer Awareness Hotline on 0208 222 7128, because Knowledge is power!
At least make a donation towards helping their research save thousands of lives!

I know that I am one very lucky cancer-survivor, (thank God for his prompting,) and therefore feel it is my responsibility to tell you the truth. Now, it’s up to you!

That’s why I say, first pray for guidance and Don’t Hesitate, it could be too late!

Yesterday, our team in Sacramento, combined with many other groups passionate about the Cow Palace, had a real victory in the battle to save it. The Senate Agricultural Committee decided not to vote on the bill. This was the best possible outcome we could have hoped for (other than killing the bill outright which was not likely this early in the process).

This is not over. There will be another vote soon, but hopefully a compromise will be worked out before then that saves the Cow Palace and provides local residents with land for a shopping center.

Dear Cow Palace Supporter,

This is a reminder of two things:

1) We have chartered a bus to Sacramento this Tuesday to take people from the Cow Palace parking lot to the Senate Agricultural Committee meeting, (full details below). The Committee WILL be acting on the Bill to Kill the Cow Palace. They could vote to kill the bill or to pass it on to a second committee. We need to make a strong showing to kill it now! Read below, and email to reserve space. We still need a few more people to fill the bus.
Pick up is at 6:30 AM. You will be back to the Cow Palace by 3:30. Minimum donation to defray cost is $20.

And,

2) please plan to help us hand out flyers at the Grand National Rodeo beginning this coming weekend:

http://www.grandnationalrodeo.com/

Just drop us an email and indicate what day you can be there AM or PM for 2-3 hour shifts. Very casual. Very enjoyable. Great feedback from the 99% of attendees that want to save the Cow Palace and don't know how!

SACRAMENTO BUS - DETAILS:

Hello!

Reserve your seat on the bus on April 1. (Road Trip!)

Please return email to confirm the exact number of seats you need, (or if you want to add someone - we may still have a few seats)

The Bus (a 24 passenger mini bus from King Transportation) will be leaving from the Cow Palace main parking lot at 6:30 AM Tuesday April 1, 2008

Parking: Free all day at the Cow Palace (confirmed with management). Gate opens at 6:00 AM. Park in front of the main Arena. That is where the bus will pick-up and drop off and where your car will be most secure.

Cost: Minimum $20 donation requested and appreciated, (anytime during trip)

Cancellation: If you are not able to go (or if you got this by mistake) please return email and let me know so I can make space for others if we are full.

Bus Hosts: Save the Cow Palace volunteers Robert Chambliss & Genevieve Southwick (I will be going up the night before).

Attire: Business casual, Western casual, Gap, etc. Just respectful. Suits not necessary but welcome.

Important: Do Not bring pocket knives, etc. Full security check upon entry of Capitol building.

Return: The bus should have you back to the Cow Palace around 3:30 or 4:00 in the afternoon. The meeting should be over around noon (it starts at 9:30 AM). We will let everyone find lunch around the Capitol, and leave around 1:00 or 1:30 depending.

Notes: this bus does not have a restroom and the restrooms at the Cow Palace will be locked at that time of day! The driver can certainly stop along the way on request. It is of course non-smoking. Bring a lunch to eat on the Capital steps or lovely grounds. There are eateries within walking distance of the Capitol if you prefer.

The Senate Agricultural Committee hearing will be in Room 113 in the State Capitol building, (near the Rotunda/dome). You will get there 30-60 min. prior to the beginning of the meeting so you will have time to get oriented and explore this magnificent historic structure a bit. However, the meeting will likely be packed (the room holds 45) so getting seats early is good.

The meeting will be open to anyone who wants to speak in support (first) and in opposition (second). Time will likely be limited to 2 min. per person. Please do not disparage Senator Yee or any other elected officials as this doesn't help. Stick to matters of policy, personal views, or anything you think important for the 5 members of the Committee to know.

Likely outcome: The first committee to hear a bill usually passes it on to the next committee out of respect to the author of the bill. However, this bill is so poorly conceived that we are hoping they will kill it here in the first committee, or suggest significant amendment. That is why it is important to have a good show of opposition - so we hope you can indeed join us. If it passes this step however, we will simply continue the fight. Around 6,000 bills are proposed per year, only around 5,800 actually get signed into law by the Governor. We should be guardedly optimistic.

FYI - Important Information:
-Link to the Legislative Analysis completed on Thursday 3/27/08 by the Ag Committee analyst. It is well worth reading and is what the Committee members use to understand the issue. It is actually fairly balanced.
Click here to download our recent press release that is packed with information and facts (some of which conflict with the analysis)
I mention this for those Cow Palace Savers who cannot make it to the Capitol, you can fight here on the Home Front! ( And in less time! ). I further mention this - since I can't attend - but came up with a funny idea, that ANY of YOU can freely steal!!

Here's the gag:( If you've seen any of those "Chick-Filet" Ad Campaigns, with the Cows carrying signs saying stuff like "Chikun Iz Gud",or "Eat Mor Chikun!",you'll get it. ) Dressed in a Cow Costume - thus representing The Cow Palace - carry a placard with Leland Yee's image, and written across it in black crayon, "Eat Mor Chickun!"...the flipside could say "Save The Cow Palace",etc. Heck you could even be more than one cow!

Just an idea...but yet another Local Event to get the message across, and it does go through the financial district!

Apologies for cross-posting - I thought this event would be of interest to both costumers & faire folk, so I'm posting it in a few tribes.

Costume Con is an annual event that moves around the country (and sometimes goes international) -- this year we are really lucky that it is coming to San Jose (first time in 14 years it's been in California!). For those who like to make costumes, or like to wear them, this is going to be a great venue to learn about costuming, and even more importantly, to socialize with likeminded people! There will be classes, competitions, and tons of social events (and yes, the hotel has a party floor!).

It takes place April 25-28, 2008, so it's coming up in about a month! The cost goes up incrementally every so often - currently a weekend membership is $95 and will be $110 if you buy at the door - so purchase in advance!

Check out their website for lots of details on classes, competitions, social events, hotel info, etc.: http://www.CC26.info

Here's some more info:

Costume-Con Returns to the Bay Area
Costumers Gather to Ooo, Ahh, and Learn

For the first time in 14 years, Costume-Con returns to California! Costume-Con is a premiere venue for professional and hobbyist costumers to meet, compete, share, and socialize. Costume-Con 26 takes place April 25-28, 2008, the San Jose DoubleTree. Visit http://www.CC26.info for more information.

Costume-Con 26 welcomes space cadets, living history aficionados, reenactors, textile designers, theater designers, fursuiters, mascots, cosplayers, fantasy costumers, costume professionals and folks who just like to dress up! The convention offers fun and education for all types of costumers, and those who appreciate costumes, such as photographers and artists.

Kevin Roche, master class award winning amateur costumer, is the chair for the convention, and will include his work in the retrospective programming. The historical and science-fiction contests are a major draw, for designers and skilled sewers alike. Fashion designers will find the Parallel Dimensions in Design competitions right up their alley. Mad Science Fair competitors create wild props and gadgets. Topics of workshop interest range from stagecraft to historical tribe design. Not to miss out on the lighter side, convention events include a Victorian Underwear Party and a Mouse-Kerade (costumed stuffed animals parade), as well as a special Doll Exhibit, featuring Japanese jointed dolls.

The bill to kill the Cow Palace, SB1527, will be heard and ACTED upon by the Senate Agricultural Committee on April 1st, 2008. It is critical that the Senators who are on this committee receive letters, emails
and calls prior to April 1st!! Do ALL THREE. Go to http://www.savethecowpalace.com/stop.html for their names, addresses, websites & a sample letter. Cut and paste and mail, or author your own!

Please plan to come to Sacramento on April 1st at 9:30 AM. We need bodies to fill the Senate Committee Chambers to overflowing. Pencil the date and if you can make it, let us know via email and we will coordinate ridesharing or possibly a bus! This is where we can kill this thing!

If the Agricultural Committee does not kill it, then it proceeds to a vote of the Senate and the Assembly (2/3 required)...and we fight on.

If you have not yet signed the petition and put a few words on it, please do so: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/CowPalace/
Go to the SIGNATURES tab after you have signed and read some of the more than 600 passionate entries people have made. It's inspiring.

We will be printing this out and hand delivering to every member of the Committee.

WE CAN BEAT THIS THING

Spread the word. Remind people NOW is the time if they have not already sat down to write a REAL letter as well as send an email, or make a call. Tell them about APRIL 1st! Print out flyers and pass them out at events, parties or in your neighborhood (in Daly City or anywhere! The Cow Palace is world famous). This will drive people to the website where they will get the 411.

Remember, signing the petition is not enough, they must write a letter and put a stamp on it and mail it to be most effective. Emails and Calls are second best. Petitions are the least effective, but ours shows up on the website with peoples statements which gives it double value.

LIES? WOULD A SENATOR LIE TO GET HIS WAY???

Read the fact sheet (link on front page of website) to learn the TRUTH about what Senator Yee and Daly City officials are saying in an attempt to convince people SB1527 is necessary. It is not! AND there is an excellent compromise available to save the Cow Palace AND provide the Bayshore/Daly City community with a needed retail center AND pay for upgrades to the Cow Palace. A win-win-win solution!!! But WE MUST DEFEAT SB1527 for this to happen.

IF ONE ACRE OF COW PALACE LAND IS SOLD, THE MONEY GOES AWAY (disappearing into the "Deficit Recovery Bond Sinking Fund Sub account") and the Cow Palace cannot use it for upgrades. The long term lease of the 13 acres to Daly City or a retail developer is the ONLY and the BEST way!!!

Thank you!!!

Hey - and many thanks to those of you who volunteer many hours at the Flower and Garden show over the past few days. We handed out over 10,000 flyers!

Tatoo Expo next...email info@savethecowpalace.com if you want to help with that one.

The ball takes place about a generation after our Dickens Fair but you'll see a number of your Dickens Fair colleagues - many of them in roles they play or have played at Fair. Come celebrate the 16th birthday and "come-out" of one of our beloved Fair children, Miss Katherine Pruyn, in the role of Her Royal Highness, the Princess Louise.

The Royal Debutante Ball
(sponsored by the Period Events & Entertainments Re-Creation Society)
Saturday, April 5, 2008
Site: The San Mateo Masonic Temple, 100 N. Ellsworth Avenue (at Tilton), San Mateo
Doors Open at 6:45 p.m.
Dance Lesson: 7:00 p.m.
Dancing begins: 8:00 p.m.
Advance General Tickets: $15.00 (by Saturday, March 29)
Tickets at the Door: $20.00
Band: Bangers & Mash
Ball Website: http://peers.org/debutante.html

Their Royal Highnesses, Edward Albert, Prince of Wales, and Alexandra, Princess of Wales, request the pleasure of your company at a ball in honour of the debut in Society of their eldest daughter, Her Royal Highness, Princess Louise.

Suggested costume is late Victorian evening dress, dress uniform, or vintage or modern evening dress (the year is 1885 but please don't feel compelled to have a new gown made just for this occasion, ladies, unless you really wish to!). As usual, costumes are admired, not required/

Young ladies wishing to make their debut along with the Princess Louise are extremely welcome. Although the customary ensemble for a debutante is white, we can stretch a point for those preferring ivory or cream (and Her Majesty certainly won’t expel you from Court if you insist on wearing another colour). Ladies already "out," of course, have an unlimited choice of colors for their ensemble.

Bangers & Mash plays an evening of elegant Victorian dance music, focusing on waltzes, quadrilles, reels, grand marches, and other set dances, but also including polkas, schottisches, and mazurka waltzes. There will be a pre-ball dance class at 7:00 pm, but all set dances will be briefly taught and called at the ball.

Punch and a light snack buffet will be served throughout the evening (Your potluck contributions to the Royal Kitchen will be very welcome!).

To order advance tickets to the ball, please send a check for $15.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. If you would like to buy tickets online, go to the ball website at http://peers.org/debutante.html , scroll down to the PayPal icon and click on it for instructions. Tickets will be sold for $20.00 at the door.

For further information, please call (510) 522-1731 or email peers@peers.org.
