    Hmmmm. Sounds shaky to me.

Not saying it isn't possible. There have always been suspicions about an affair, I just think the reasoning and evidence are faulty. Not what I would call proof.

Reminds me of the people who are convinced that Elizabeth I had babies by at least half a dozen different people.

Let's see a ring found in the possession of someone who'd lived with him.
And used by that person's son as "proof" that he was his son.

I'm convinced, because the ring couldn't have been a gift to a sister-in-law or stolen by the sister-in-law!

There is no occasion in history of someone liking their in-laws more than their spouse!
Maybe it was just to tick off his ex!

      I'm convinced!
      Yes, I am...
      Now I can sleep better!

      We'll never know the truth.

        Are you kidding?

As a portrayer of his eldest daughter and director of Tavistock House where we portray his family, I can tell you that based on extensive research that not only was there NOT an affair between Auntie Georgie & Mr. Dickens, but that it's not surprising that he left her more in his will than his wife and mistress. Georgina managed his house, raised his children, made sure that everything was perfect for Mr. Dickens - and Dickens was generous to his family members (even when those family members squandered the money). And quite honestly she wouldn't have had time to have borne and raised his son.

It sounds like someone wanting to get a higher bidding price on what is already an interesting heirloom.

Never heard those rumours about Elizabeth the 1st. Even if I had I would not have believed it but I have researched her much more than I have researched Dickens. What's interesting to me about this is that any writer who writes "fictional history" such as Philippa Gregory(1) could take rumours and conjecture like this and spin a novel out of it, such as the case of "The Other Boleyn Girl" (recently destroyed by the movie version). This is a fabulous book based on history with some artist inflection. What's real and what's made up is up to you. However most of her books are made with a grain of truth at least and not taken and remade, upped the budget, and given guns (to quote Eddie Izzard). So I had never heard this rumour before and found it interesting. Truth or not is up to you to decide.

Mr Dickens was a larger than life character with some interesting quirks and shadows, but this story reeks of a hydraulic system designed to pump more money for an artifact

Don't see how you could research E the First and NOT have found at least some of those rumours - from Tom Seymour on, there are some pretty juicy (and largely baseless) conjectures

Philippa Gregory has gotten better both as a researcher and a writer ; for example "The Other Queen" is a terrific read and very well-done.

I only read through the first page or so. After that I figured this audience might be interested to see it. Considering it comes from the Times as opposed to the Sun I figured there was SOME truth to it. If it had been the Sun I assure you I would not have wasted anyone's time. Hell I would not have even wasted my own!

Well I have never seen them. I knew about her and Robert....something or rather... (can't recall the last name) but not a whole bunch about any of the other stuff.

I haven't read that yet. I think I have it in my collection but if I do it's currently sitting in storage in NYC waiting for me to bring it out here.
