Re: research help
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 8:38 AMAt the risk of sounding a little snarky (which isn't my intent), you may wish to try a visit to the research librarian at your local library. These folks have spent *years* learning just where to look to get the right information.
AFAIK, Victoria did not visit the US. If I'm wrong, someone please jump in. -

Re: research help
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 9:00 AMGood Queen Vicky also wasn't much on addressing her loving people in public. She usually spoke through intermediaries. -

Tue, April 8, 2008 - 9:01 AMYou could read Dickens' opinion of Americans - yipe!

Re: research help
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 11:02 AMi made an appointment with the research librarian at my local college but he warned me that of all the time periods the are lacking on information pertaining to the victorian era... as far as primary sources go. , to give you a better understanding of what it is im looking for. im supposed to pick a speech (that was either aimed at or would have been heard by americans) i am then supposed to analyze the speech based off of the rhetoric and techniques used within the speech and evaluate its effectiveness based off of the environment and what was going on at the time. i am looking for something from the victorian time period A) because its more interesting B) because its an excuse to do so C) because my professor said she would like to see me do so. -

Re: research help
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 11:09 AMWell, the analogous period in the US is pretty broad, including the American Civil War.
I would think you would have better luck with that, particularly considering the number of speeches made by such personae as Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. -

Re: research help
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 11:12 AMI imagine that every speech she made has to be assembled SOMEWHERE. Probably in some sort of Royal Archive. -

Re: research help
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 11:17 AMI would tend to agree ...
A quick Google search revealed a few archival items at www.parliament.uk, with the caviat that after Albert's death Victoria did not usually come to open parliament anymore. Pardon failure to capitalize, etc., as I am at work awaiting urgent call from boss-man and trying to be quick about it. -

Re: research help
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 11:39 AMSadly, since the English Civill War, they've stopped making Monarchs like they used to and they leave most of the talking to (ahem) subjects and commoners. They get carted out to cut a ribbon or christen a boat, but don't do much else. -

Re: research help
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 1:47 PMI agree that Dickens had some interesting opinions of the States, upon his visit.
It is worth looking at. This of course is only if you cannot find what you are looking for from Queen Victoria.

No need to go to the library for this. Here's the complete text of Dickens' American Notes. You might not find exactly what you want in it, but chances are you'll find it fascinating!

Re: research help
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 2:48 PMTry this:
query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html
Choose the "view full article" option to open a pdf of the speech
Here's the Wiki page on The Treaty of Washington:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trea...ton_(1871)
These were found with a quick google...
Good Luck!

Re: research help
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 9:39 AMI believe the only time Good Queen Vicy left her scepter'd isle was when she went (with Albert) to visit the French Emperor (and his oh-so-chic Empress, Eugenie)

Re: research help
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 7:10 PMFootnotey-ish Thingy...Queen Vickie apparently did enjoy the company of Americans. She was quite fond of "Buffalo Bill" Cody & his Wild West Show.( They were granted personal visits. And Annie Oakley got to have her shooting skills tested against Albert...first time she held back, miffing AL,so he insisted she actually try on the 2nd meeting, and she beat the pants off of him! ) ( Smooth move Albert,shut-up and win gracefully. ). The Q. was also visited by President Millard Fillmore - ( Post presidency ) - and declared him "handsome".

not that I'm aware of.
Bit of family lore...
My greatX3 grandfather, Thomas Sully, traveled to paint her portrait, though. Victoria dressed up his daughter, including putting the Crown Jewels on her. She is the only American to ever wear wear the jewels.
