Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Thu, December 25, 2008 - 10:46 PMTo start, I'll mention the shopping ladies and their men who carried these precarious towers of gift boxes, looking like they might fall at any moment while the ladies kept their men hurried along! That was great!

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Fri, December 26, 2008 - 2:06 AMPersonally I rather enjoyed charging through the streets on a stolen bicycle, screaming The Raven at the top of my lungs! -

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Fri, December 26, 2008 - 10:52 AMBella Wilfer, having received a rose as a token of friendship from her guardian's smitten secretary, proceeding to return the rose by casting it back, one petal at a time, while belittling and ridiculing him. Pure dramatic gold. -

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Fri, December 26, 2008 - 2:06 PMStated simply, I had so much fun in the streets with both our guests and my fellow actors that no one thing stands out. I felt that (with the exception of the occasional heckler from within our ranks) almost everyone who came to Fair, participants and visitors alike, really wanted to play. It certainly seems that this has been one of the best Dickens ever! -

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Fri, December 26, 2008 - 7:56 PMI adored gigging with David Copperfield (Anton) and Steerforth (Billy). I especially loved when Steerforth and his cronies got David drunk and then paraded him by Peggotty and Agnes Wickfield (Amy). I boxed Steerforth's ears and berated both him and David soundly. It was great fun.
Thank you Billy and Anton, for such lovely characters to work with. Really, everyone was exceptional this year, with so many wonderful gigs, but that one stands out for me.

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Wed, December 31, 2008 - 3:19 PMWhy thank you. It was WONDERFULLY fun, if for no other reason that the looks of barely contained shock on the faces of Sir Mulberry and his cronies. So much fun to play the brat.

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Fri, December 26, 2008 - 10:27 PMI loved impromptu gigging with Bill Sikes--he always knew when we tarts were "trying to avoid him," and instead of out-and-out threatening, did this wonderful bullying cat-and-mouse, but, as an actor, always gave us an out.
My usual "Ullo, lovey, yer remember me, doncha...OHHHHH, got the trouble'n'strife with you, never saw him before in my life, miss." ALWAYS makes the women giggle. Also, it spread, many more tarts are doing it, and it always gets a larf (if you make sure to pick on an older couple whose body language says "We like each other!"
The Pickwick Club, always on, always (playing) tipsy, always jolly (particularly when mobbing Bill Sikes the last day!)
Sir Mulberry Hawk and his cronies, always on, always (playing) sleazy.
The way everyone would (in a very in-character, Victorian way) go NUTS when the Queen showed up--I think we got across to the customers that This Woman is a Great Big Deal.

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Sat, December 27, 2008 - 11:03 PMThe other thing that gets customers smiling that I was doing was welcoming customers *back* to Sal's, followed by a quick "Oh, oi mean welcome to Sal's, never seen you before in my life." With a quick aside to the husband of "She's much better looking than who you were here with last night - good job." Or sometimes to the wife of "He's not as good looking as who you were with last night - I think you can do better." And, at times, "Nope never seen either of you here before - not together, anyway."
There's also the explaining to customers why the Sal's stage is dark until noon: "They're all sleeping it off backstage. It was a long night of too much gin and too much inappropriately placed mistletoe, you knows how it is." -
-
Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 6:11 PM>There's also the explaining to customers why the Sal's stage is dark until noon:
That's a great sign of how popular they really are--it takes a good 5, 10 minutes to walk to that end of town in the opening crowds, and could take an hour, easy, to get there if you stop and look at shops and character,so the fact that they were already there means that's WHY they were there.
But you probably figured that out! -
-
Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 6:52 PMI always thought Sal's wasn't open until noon because that's when all the girls finally roll out of bed! -
-
Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 8:08 PMCory, using forks as chopsticks was brilliant. As I found myself escorting guests through the streets of London, they are still talking raving about how hilarious that was.

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Fri, December 26, 2008 - 11:31 PMMine was trying to clean the hem of the Tarts' skirts and negotiating prices with Jeremy. The real question was who was charging and who was getting charged! Ah, the joy of being the only Chinese laundry in London! -
-
Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Sat, December 27, 2008 - 5:06 AMI also loved gigging with Bill Sikes, I actually got nose to nose with him. Poor dear didn't realize Mrs. Cooper isn't scared of anybody! -
-
Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 5:33 PMErm...hate to burst a bubble...you may have stood toe to toe with Bill...but weren't taken as a serious threat.

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Sat, December 27, 2008 - 9:47 AMHow could I forget to mention that! That was brilliant:
"You pay me, I clean! Good Chinese soap"
"No, YOU pay, good-time girls!"
"No, I clean, dir-tee girls, YOU pay!"
I am rarely speechless, but I stood there with my mouth open as Jeremy negotiated (in the time-honored tradition of "English not his first language? Get LOUDER!") and my hem smelled more like sandalwood.
Also, attempting to use forks as chopsticks was a good way to get people engaged. -

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Sat, December 27, 2008 - 6:17 PMAnother favorite was Corey (four posts below) came up to me in his Chinese get up and it was the ONE TIME I broke character because he cracked me up soooo fucking much! It was all I could do to not bust out laughing! Dude, you were so funny and so caught me off gaurd, that I couldn't contain it and was snicking right there on the street as you prattled on in pidgeon Chinese. Damn that was funny! -
-
Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Sat, January 3, 2009 - 9:00 AMThis Corey - He reminded me of the young Jerry Lewis.. with the chinese suit on the prowl, I followed him 'about town for over 1/2 hr. He cracked so many people up.. some did'nt know what to believe or what they were seeing.
Using the double forks as chopsticks dropped me to the ground in laughter.. Well Done Young Lad

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 5:54 PMMy fave gig this year , came in the form of a non-planned interaction with a total stranger! Last day of fair , I decided to get rid of my freebie tickets - had no family or friend to fob them off on - so I trolled the entrance line. I was asking groups - rather loudly - "Okay, so , who loves Flash Toby Crackit? " ( No response.) "I'm Flash Toby , I might mention. " ( Cheesey smile, doff the hat. ). "Are you sure? Could be worth your while to love me!" ( Uneasy looks from crowd. ) Eventually one woman gives in..."I love Flash Toby Crackit!" , to make sure , I had her repeat it loudly, three more times , then rewarded her with a free ticket...elation! ( Rest of crowd look pissy . )
Cut to four hours later - inside - I'm with Bill Sikes , Jeremy Wolfe , and Wolfe's two cronies... Jeremy is eyeing a woman standing in line for fish & chips , I follow the gaze - it's the above mentioned woman - Me: "Oh HER. Yeah , shes a bit of alright!" , Jeremy: "Oh yes Flash , like she'd have anything to do with the likes of you!" . Me: " Go ask her , if you've got the courage!" Much to my delight , Jeremy steps up , asks , "Do you know that bloke?" And I kid you not , she replies , "Oh yes , that's Flash Toby , I love him! ". Dead Silence by all , as I laugh my ass off! Thank you mystery patron, you have great comic timing!!

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Thu, January 1, 2009 - 9:19 PMI had a great time conversing with Marley about the state of my accounts. This year I was in the black!
As for other gigs I absolutely adore watching Miss Havisham with the children and her toy mice. Also, Paul Nathan on the Paddy West stage was brilliant.

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 1:01 PMI really enjoyed the Otherbook's morning tea in front of Cuthberts (a highlight of my days at Dickens this year). Sometimes we were able to get patrons to join us for tea, & we often told guests walking by about things not to miss while in London. The tea time grew from 2 or 3 ladies to up to 10 with the Cheerable brothers & Pickwick Club sometimes joining us. What a delight. -
-
Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Thu, January 8, 2009 - 12:48 AMI enjoyed our tea with you all too. Boffinization: definitely a good thing.
I had fun being 'rolled' at Sal's by The Scum, and of course the daily Pickwick Dinner and singing for the Queen. But most memorable for me this year was the mass lynching of Sykes on the last day. That was epic. -

Thu, January 15, 2009 - 11:42 AMI met tim Curry at a supermarket in Hollywood once... I asked him if he had any clue then that they were creating such a cult classic. He said "No, but if I had it to do over again, I would have worn different Lingerie"

Sat, January 17, 2009 - 4:04 PMBrilliant.
I used to portray Magenta 20+ years ago. We could get a Dickensian cast going. -

Sat, January 17, 2009 - 7:53 PMI was Janet over (oh my goodness!) 25 years ago! (Both in a theater cast and in, no, seriously, a G-rated version done for a children's library program!) -

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Sun, January 18, 2009 - 4:15 PMI'm sure within the ranks , we have enough Dickensians to supply a dozen full casts! Sadly,I'm now large enough to be Meatloaf! -

Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Tue, January 20, 2009 - 4:00 AMMy brain really wants to put Mr. Dickens as Frank, but from an intellectual point of view, he's more ideally cast as the Criminologist.
And, purely for character casting, Mrs. Finching would make a great Janet... -
-
Re: Your favorite gigs in the streets?
Tue, January 20, 2009 - 11:14 AMIf you saw the back of a particular commemorative brass pin, you would realize that our own, dear Mr Dickens would be the *perfect* Frank! -
