The London Telegraph service! Last year there was some serious fun being had via that resource and this year, I haven't used it once, nor have I seen many of the others I know send or receive them. I think they cost... what? $3 or so? I think I'll see about sending a couple this weekend! How about you?

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 9:08 AMMaybe I'm assuming too much. Perhaps you have used it. Or been a recipient. Any good telegraph tales to tell that have transpired already? -

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 9:12 AMThis is an excellent service (run by the other Mrs Porter, I might add). Participants do get a discount. Theyhave a horde of Faire brats carrying the telegrams this year, so the kids are loud and game to improv (as a rule). There's no reason NOT to send a telegram! -

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 10:04 AMIt is great fun to both send and receive them. In another thread, I mentioned that the ladies of Leggetts London Tours used to send them to each other all of the time. They can also be a nice way to introduce yourself to that attractive person whom you are shy of approaching in person (done that, too). So as Therese says ... there is no reason NOT to send a telegram. -

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Sat, December 13, 2008 - 4:03 AMJust curious, who are the ladies of Leggetts London Tours? Do they actually interact with visiting patrons akin to a tour or is it a staged gig? How does one contact them? -

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Sat, December 13, 2008 - 6:38 AMA number of years ago now, Ruth and Steve Leggett ran an establishment called the Rose & Stag, not unlike today's Green Man. It was more of a "club" than an inn, however. Very sociable. (Lovely games of whist. A drop of bracing and rejuvenating sherry.) The tours were booked and led from that establishment. However, those were days gone by. We were still on Pier 45.
Ahh ... the memories ....

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Sun, December 14, 2008 - 9:08 AMAs a pickwick pass holder, I got one telegram sent free! I had so much fun with it, I may just spring for $5 next week and send another. Hmmm... who's stage show can I interupt this time ... ;-)
ps - I had no idea they'd deliver it to Robin during the Ladies Revue! I wish I'd been there to see/hear it!
Fun idea, Kurt! I wonder how the telegraph office is doing today? -

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Sun, December 14, 2008 - 9:59 PMLiselle - it was the highlight of my day. It's been just about forever since I got a telegram, so it came a big smile-maker.

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Mon, December 15, 2008 - 8:28 AMAs Diana explained, this was a great resource that is no longer there. Because the show can be confusing, the "tour" took people around and showed them where things were -- and introduced the guests to the book and historical characters we ran into along the way. It was a great way to get people involved. I had groups as large as 30 and as small as one customer the day I had strained my voice (a very nice gentleman in Confederate uniform, playing a blockade runner, who bought me hot cider every time we passed a vendor).
I had a particularly unruly group of Cub Scouts one day (their leader had decided they would benefit from the tour) ... I sold them to Fagin.
It was a very enjoyable and (IMO) still much-needed gig. -

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Mon, December 15, 2008 - 9:20 AMWhen Mr. Jingle can attend, he does lead tours of London, very entertaining. Sadly (for us), he's otherwise engaged this year. -

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Mon, December 15, 2008 - 1:36 PMThe cool thing about LLT was that there were about 15 of us on staff, so we were able to go all day long. I have met Mr. Jingle, and he is great ... but there is only one of him, after all. :-( -

Tue, December 16, 2008 - 7:34 PMSo is this something that could resurrected next year? -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

That's a very good question, Liz.
Sadly, Ruth (the Rose of the Rose & Stag) is no longer with us. I don't know that Steve would want to take it on again without her. It would be great for someone to take the gig on and run with it...I'll mention it to him when I see him. I'm sure he has valuable insights to share : )

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 8:37 PMi miss Mr. Jingle too. He always graciously gave out my handbills and loved to finish up his tour at my Tarantella lecture where he barged in and scared the daylights out of all that were following him. Agreed that there is only one of him. I can't even fathom something else doing what it is he does.

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 10:01 AMi thought they were $5? i wish i knew about the participant discount before blowing all that cash on telegrams last year...
maybe i'll send some more this year if they're really $3 for us -
-
Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 10:04 AMThey are indeed $3 for participants - I sent one just last weekend. The extras - roses, candy canes, coal - are indeed extra, but a basic telegram (charmingly handwritten and riotously hand-delivered) is only $3 -

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 10:05 AMIf there's a run on the telepgraph office, please don't tell the other Mrs Porter that it's my fault -

Re: An entirely under-used resource!
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 11:41 AMAre they still offering the 10 for $20 discount? Very useful, that. Go in with some friends, or make it a present to your guild
