How to Get the Most Out of the Dickens Fair

I am trying to drum up customers for Dickens Fair on several of my group e-lists. I am going to write a post about "How to Get the Most Out of Dickens Fair" or maybe "How to Enjoy Dickens Fair." This is meant for people who may never have gone to something like this, or who have, and didn't really understand what was going on. I'm writing it because I remember going to Fair(e)s in the past, and not really getting what I was supposed to "do." Now that I have gotten involved, I realize that if I had been told some ground rules, I would have gotten a lot more out of it.

I would like to get some input from you guys about what to include in my post about how to enjoy the Fair. Do you have a sentence or two to add to my post? Any edits of what I have written are welcome, too.

So far, I have:

"Don't be shy about interacting with the actors. Try not to be intimidated if you aren't in costume, or can't match their accents. We LOVE it if people interact with us!! That's why we're here! Unlike in "real life," it is not rude to listen in on our conversations!

There are a couple instances where there are actual scripted scenes, but they are pretty obvious, and if you see one, wait until it's over, then go up to the actor right after and ask them questions about what is happening.

The actors try hard to stay "in character" so if you talk to a "rough" looking character, you will get a "rough" response, and if you walk up to a "genteel" character, you will get a "genteel" response.

If you are shy, start with asking a gentleman for the time, and then comment on his watch...or compliment a lady on her hat, and ask where she shopped for it. Go with the flow, and enjoy yourself!

And try to resist the urge to flit from one thing to the next. I personally think you'll get more out of things if you spend some time at each attraction."

Don't be afraid to ask us questions. (Especially if you are lost, or just feel lost. ) And if we can't answer your question, we will direct you to someone who can. (And be sure to watch for the fine folks wearing signs saying "Questions Answered". They are very good at helping. )

I think that sounds pretty good Peggy. Normally the first thing I tell someone is they need to suspend reality. If they walk in looking for flaws they will find them, but if they walk in with reality on hold, and ready to use the creative side of the their brain, they will have a whole lot of fun.

Admittedly this is one of my well-worn ruts, but I would emphasise the immersive and interactive aspects of the show and the rewards of perusing everything in a leisurely fashion. Our guests our entering a world where there is an enormous amount of things to see and do, and they should take the time to savour it. This is also an environment wherein it is safe to make eye contact, to strike up a conversation with people one has never met before, to get into the real Spirit of Christmas.

I usually try to remind first time friends to make reservations at Cuttberts Tea shop and to get NFP tx as the very first thing they do otherwise they may not get in either.

Walk into the Adventurer's Club. Most people just peer in from outside. I've had the best time getting non-costumed friends in some of the most unusual conversations there.

Also, had a non-costumed friend measured by the phrenologist which was good fun. If they see someone and don't know what they do or who they are, ask them.

Have them try a dance or a game at Fezziwigs. I especially like taking non-costumed men by Fezziwigs because it's fairly easy to find an enthusiastic Fezzi to drag them out onto the floor. If they want to dance, remind them to stand near the edge of the dance floor and smile (sitting in the back or in the bleachers will garner less, if any, invitations to dance).

Sing-a-longs at Mad Sal's is a good place for participation for the less assertive.

Remind them that they will be led through the waltzes and other dances if they are unfamiliar, so they should have no shyness of dancing at Fezzi's. And then they can impress their sig with their masterful technique on the ball room floor.

ALWAYS get one of those free programmes at the door! Take a moment to sit down and give it a glance , maybe while having a cookie or some morning sweet treat - see what there is to see ,and then plan accordingly. If you can't see it all in one day - we're open for four weekends - come back a second day , and see what you missed , and buy those things you put off the previous visit!

If your friends are a bit shy about approaching people they don't know, perhaps getting them into the Time Game (is that being played again this year?) would help? I know that I look for those name tags to use as a reason to approach people. That way, I can call them by their chosen name and ask how their day of XYZ occupation is going (e.g., "Oh, Missus Smith. How good to see you on this fine Christmas eve. Are you looking for a good Christmas goose for your family?" or similar).

I'm a Pickwick Club member, not a participant ... but you will find me in costume 99 percent of the time and more than willing to play. (The last day? I go in civvies to make sure I get a dance or two at Fezzi's ... so now you know my secret, LOL.)

They are located under the garland swags right next to the greenman, physically, during run.

I agree with the idea of singing along in Mad Sal's. We have lots of fun new songs (and contrary to popular opinion, most of them are NOT filthy - funny, yes) and we have sing-along sheets as well as many of the lyrics are seen on the signs held up onstage.

And when they're finished there, they'll be in great form to mosey on up to Fezziwigs and join in on the Hallelujah Chorus (also complete with signs for those tricky lyrics).

Most all, I so agree with others' sentiments here. Please take your time, meander sloooowly so that you get a chance to soak up all the wonderful sights and sounds of the show. There's a whole lot of Christmas tucked around every corner.
